Technological support and road safety

Hamburg relies on state-of-the-art technology for controls. In a previous report fromSeptember 2, 2025It was announced that the mobile speed cameras are equipped with laser and lidar technology. Before a speed measurement, drivers receive a short warning in the form of a flashing red light. The use of these technologies is primarily aimed at increasing road safety, especially near schools and retirement homes.

The planning of these mobile speed cameras is part of a larger concept to improve traffic safety in Hamburg. In 2024, a whopping 47 million euros were brought into the city treasury through fines from speeding and red light violations. This is an increase of three million euros compared to the previous year. Hamburg has also achieved a top spot in speed camera statistics and was even awarded the “Golden Speed Camera” by the German Lawyers’ Association.

Insights into the control results

The results of the traffic control service are traditionally published annually. From 2024, these results will now be fundamentally revised and structured more clearly with regard to reports from road and toll controls. Technical innovations are also taken into account, which could monitor compliance with traffic regulations more precisely in the future.

One focus is on the distinction between sensory and manual controls, which should enable a detailed analysis of the traffic situation in the city. This means that citizens are fully informed about changes and road safety.

So anyone driving in Hamburg today or in the near future should keep an eye on the speed limits. The mobile speed cameras are fast and efficient, and the fines are not negligible. The numbers speak for themselves: With a total of 482 speed cameras in 41 cities, the pressure on road users to keep their speed under control is high.

Anyone who follows the rules not only contributes to their own safety, but also to the safety of other road users in Hamburg.
