New bike concept in the Composers' Quarter: 164 bike bars for more space!
Something is happening in terms of cycling infrastructure in the Composers Quarter! As the Hamburg-Nord district office stated in a recent report, the district is being upgraded with a new concept. The plan is to install 164 new bike racks at 23 different locations to meet the increasing need for parking spaces. This measure is no coincidence, as a comprehensive analysis has shown that there is a lack of suitable parking facilities in many places in the district.
The new bike bars are mainly installed on sidewalks, side streets and parking lanes. It will be important to the planners to ensure that local residents are disturbed as little as possible during construction work. This means access to the houses is guaranteed at all times and walking and cycling traffic should only be minimally affected. Particular attention is paid to protecting street trees: experts will accompany the work to avoid damage.
Expansion of cycling infrastructure
As the report on hamburg.de further explains, there are both short-term and long-term measures in the box. A total of 190 bike racks and 10 cargo bike racks are planned at eleven locations. These measures show that the city is seriously interested in improving cycling infrastructure. Preparations for implementation are already underway and the first construction work is scheduled to start at the beginning of December 2025. Full implementation is then planned for the second quarter of 2026.
The district office asks the residents for their understanding of possible restrictions during the construction period. To ensure that residents are well informed, overview and site plans of the measures are provided. All cyclists should take a look here to navigate the construction process in a well-informed manner.
A look at Freiburg
There was also a certain stir recently in Freiburg, where changes to the bicycle infrastructure are also being made. The bicycle parking spaces at the central bus station (ZOB) and opposite the main train station will be cleared on October 28th to make room for urgently needed renovation work on the station garage. If you forget your bike that day, you may be out of luck, as Freiburg waste management and city cleaning will remove the bikes left behind for a fee. The fee for collection is an impressive 50 euros!
Cyclists in Freiburg are informed of the impending evictions through appropriate information boards and banderoles on their bikes in order to avoid unpleasant surprises. The renovation work on the station's underground car park has been running since March 1st and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025 - so it's better to pick up your own bikes beforehand!
While things are moving in a positive direction in Hamburg, we can only hope that cyclists in Freiburg will soon be able to get to good parking spaces again without any problems. After all, informed cyclists are the happiest cyclists!
