Hamburg launches new 50 million euro start-up factory for founders!

Hamburg has reason to be happy! On July 10, 2025 there was good news from the Federal Ministry of Economics: The Hanseatic city will receive a total of 50 million euros to build a state-of-the-art start-up factory that will support scientists and creative minds in becoming self-employed. NDR reports that this initiative aims to bring innovative technologies and materials from the laboratories to the market more quickly.

Many researchers are often faced with the big problem of capitalizing on their brilliant ideas. That should now change: The new start-up factory, which will open its doors in autumn 2025, will not only offer advice on start-up steps and intellectual property, but will also actively help in finding investors. A real all-round package for anyone who wants to venture into entrepreneurship.

Support from Hamburg and Berlin

The foundation for this initiative has been laid with the grant of 10 million euros from Berlin and a further 40 million euros from Hamburg foundations and companies that are closely linked to universities and research institutions. Support comes from, among others, the Joachim Herz Foundation, the Michael Otto Foundation, the Hamburger Sparkasse and large companies such as Nexperia and the Otto Group. Uni Hamburg highlights that Hamburg was selected as one of the ten winners in the Federal Ministry of Economics' "Startup Factories" competition.

Senator for Economic Affairs Melanie Leonhard and Senator for Science Maryam Blumenthal are behind this project and know the importance of the new start-up factory for Hamburg's start-up culture. The funding is primarily aimed at the area of deep tech and sustainable technologies, an area that needs even more attention and support in Germany in order to survive in international competition.

The “Impossible Founders” in the Digital Hub

The Hamburg start-up factory “Impossible Founders” will officially start work on October 1, 2025 in the “Digital Hub” in the Speicherstadt. Its mission is to support innovative scientific spin-offs, particularly in areas such as green technologies, new materials, artificial intelligence and data science. OpenPR further reports that the factory will make an important contribution to increasing the competitiveness of the Hamburg economy.

Another highlight: Dr. Arik Willner will take over the management of “Impossible Founders” from November 1, 2025. Under his leadership, the start-ups will not only receive access to valuable resources, but will also undergo special entrepreneurship education programs designed to optimally prepare them for the challenges of the market.

Overall, it shows that the new start-up factory in Hamburg is a promising project that will not only benefit the creative minds in the city, but will also make an active contribution to strengthening Hamburg as a location for innovation. There’s something going on – and we’re looking forward to exciting developments in the start-up world!
