A look into Bonhoeffer's soul: reading and exhibition in Nördlingen!
From October 25th to November 16th, 2025, the city of Nördlingen will be a place of remembrance and reflection on the life and work of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Today, November 12th, a reading from the “Bridal Letters Cell 92” will take place as part of the Bonhoeffer exhibition. The event at 7 p.m. will be led by Ulrike Reichenberg, Michael Fleps and Ruth Maurer, who will use Bonhoeffer's moving texts to provide insight into his emotional and spiritual attitude during his imprisonment.
The letters that Bonhoeffer wrote between 1943 and 1945 illuminate not only his personal fate, but also that of many who suffered under the Nazi regime. The evening is accompanied musically by Birgit Rothgang and Werner Lauterbach, who give the whole thing an additional emotional note. Admission to the event at St. Georg in Nördlingen is free, which underlines the accessibility of this important topic. The event is organized by EEB Donau-Ries e.V. in collaboration with Ev.-Luth. Wassertrüdingen parish.
A life for resistance
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, born on February 4, 1906 in Breslau, was not only an outstanding theologian, but also a courageous resistance fighter against National Socialist rule. As a founding member of the Confessing Church, he openly opposed the regime's ideological attacks. Together with other committed Christians, he campaigned for the rights of Jews and was actively involved in resistance actions. His efforts ultimately led to his arrest by the Gestapo in April 1943 and a long stay in prison.
During his imprisonment, Bonhoeffer developed a deep spiritual insight, which he recorded in his letters. These texts demonstrate incredible inner strength and conviction. On April 9, 1945, just a few weeks before the end of the war, he was executed after a trial that was in no way fair.
A lasting legacy
Bonhoeffer's work is still very important today. His writings, including The Cost of Discipleship and Sanctorum Communio, are studied and quoted worldwide. He is considered one of the most important theologians of the 20th century, whose ethical considerations and his vision of Christian responsibility are still relevant today. April 9, the anniversary of his death, is celebrated as a day of remembrance in many Christian communities, and his legacy continues to influence generations of theologians and believers.
Today, the Nördlinger exhibition on Bonhoeffer will not only reflect his messages, but also invite people to think about their own responsibility in society. The organizers show a good hand by putting Bonhoeffer's life and the courage required for it in the spotlight and thus stimulating discussion.
