New Alster Pavilion: Historical charm meets modern concept!

The Alster Pavilion on Jungfernstieg is about to have an exciting new beginning. From August 2025, the new operators Hannes Schröder, known from “Küchenfreunde”, and Niklas Nordmann from the Ratsherrn Brewery will take over the historic building. In a new tender, they prevailed against several competitors and signed a leasehold contract with a term of 40 years on June 20th. The previous operator, the well-known chain “Alex”, will run the pavilion until the end of October 2025.

What can Hamburg residents and visitors expect in the new era of the Alster Pavilion? Clearly, the operators have big plans. The plan is to have around 700 seats, a creative culinary offering and a lively cultural program. The philosophy behind the new concept combines brasserie style with Hanseatic aperitivo culture and Nordic flair, which is intended to give the pavilion a breath of fresh air. In addition, the currently used roof, which was neglected in previous renovations, will provide a new space for guests - an idea that was already considered by Ferdinand Streb, the architect of the original pavilion from the 1950s, but has not yet been implemented.

Renovation and reopening

Renovation will take place in November 2025, with the renovation work being carried out in keeping with the historical design of the building. The aim is to revive the original character of the Alster Pavilion, which turns 226 years old this year, and to interpret it in a modern way. The reopening is planned for early summer 2026. And best of all: The new concept of the pavilion creates flexible spaces for different events, from concerts to readings to exhibitions, with at least 50 cultural events per year.

“We are making the Alster Pavilion a cultural center in Hamburg,” says Hannes Schröder. The core offering will consist of seasonal dishes and regional Ratsherrn beer, with the variety of offerings and changing menus always offering guests something new. In addition, great importance is placed on accessibility and modern design, both in the interior and on the new outdoor terrace, which will be open to all Hamburg residents and tourists.

Historical significance and future perspective

The Alster Pavilion has experienced an eventful history over the years, marked by several renovations and new buildings. The new operating structure gives hope for long-term, creative and culturally demanding use of the monument that is in harmony with the city's identity. The MOPO reports that special attention to cultural events and the integration of the roof terrace could be the key to the preservation and further development of this Hamburg landmark.

Will the Alster Pavilion become a new heart of Hamburg? The operators' plans raise great expectations and invite you to look forward to the coming months. The first big challenge will be the renovation, which will hopefully fulfill all expectations and delight the people of Hamburg with a fresher, more inviting Alster pavilion.

There is great anticipation for the reopening in 2026. One can only hope that the new concept continues the long tradition of the Alster Pavilion in a worthy manner and invites the residents and guests of this wonderful city to come together here and enjoy life.
