New supermarket for the Veddel: hope after the cancellation of the elevated railway!

There is a lot of rumblings on the Veddel, a district in Hamburg: in the midst of disappointment and hope, a new perspective has opened up. The plan is to build a supermarket directly at the S-Bahn station in order to improve the limited shopping options for the approximately 4,500 residents. How NDR reports, the location was originally intended to provide space for a modern “mobility hub” for the elevated railway, but this has now fallen into disarray.

This summer, the major elevated railway project was scrapped due to a spate of cost explosions. Of the planned 160 million euros for the bus depot, which was also supposed to include a local supply center with a supermarket, drugstore and doctors, expenditure rose to around 250 million euros. This made the entire project unprofitable, much to the disappointment of district office chief Ralf Neubauer, who described the day as “black for the Veddel”. The MOPO cites, among other things, expensive fire protection and noise insulation requirements as reasons for the cost increase.

New plans for the Veddel

Although the Hochbahn has now stopped the mega-project, there is a ray of hope: the Mitte district is planning to create a local supply center on part of the original area. In addition to a supermarket, there will also be space for a drugstore and possibly a medical center. Other ideas include a hotel and space for community work. The plan is to implement the whole thing without having to change the development plan in order to save time. Implementation could begin in two to three years.

District office chief Neubauer remains optimistic and has already made initial approaches with a private investor. The hope is that the new plans could be finalized in spring 2026 to meet the needs of local residents. Because Veddel has suffered from severely limited shopping opportunities in recent years.

It remains exciting to see whether the district's projects can bring the hoped-for improvement for the Veddel population. The urgency of local supplies is undisputed. While residents hope for better shopping, the wheel of development continues to turn. All that remains to be seen is which providers will ultimately be built from the woodcut of the plans - and whether the dream of a new local supply center can come true.
