Hamburg's Sustainability Week 2025: Solutions for a greener future!

On June 4, 2025, the sustainability workshop was launched at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, a central part of the Hamburg Sustainability Week 2025. This ambitious event was a real highlight for everyone committed to the challenges and opportunities of sustainability. With a total of 12 sessions covering topics such as democracy education, biodiversity, housing and sustainable film production, a wide range of aspects that are important in this country and worldwide were covered. The focus was particularly on dealing with conflicting goals, for example between climate protection and social inclusion, as Hamburg.de reports.

The workshop offered a platform to work through these conflicts and develop solutions together. Synergies between various actors in civil society, culture, business, politics and administration were actively promoted. Through the active participation of partner organizations such as the Dialoghaus Hamburg, the IMAGINE HAMBURG festival and the authority for urban development and housing, different perspectives were able to be introduced. The aim was to develop practical steps for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Hamburg.

An extraordinary experience

Another highlight of Sustainability Week was the installation of the impressive Gaia globe in the main church of St. Katharinen. This artistic measure addressed the ecological balance of our planet and drew attention to the urgent measures to preserve it. Open-air events in the Grindelviertel, including the Abaton Cinema and TONALi, made sustainability tangible in an exciting way.

Particularly noteworthy was the film screening of “Moving Pictures: The Battle for Laikipia”, which impressively dealt with the problems of drought and colonialism in Kenya. Through interactive formats such as speed dating with sustainability experts and discussions under the Gaia globe, participants were able to enter into dialogue and learn from each other.

Sustainable Development: A Global Concern

The discussion about the SDGs is not just a local but a global issue. In 2015, the United Nations established 17 of these goals to promote sustainable development worldwide. These goals are inextricably linked to the Paris Climate Agreement, even if they are legally independent. It is becoming increasingly clear that the SDGs are interconnected at different levels and influence each other, which makes planning and implementation more complex, as Wupperinst also addresses.

A lecture as part of the “Courage for Sustainability” event series emphasized the need for an exchange between science and practice for the sustainable transformation of society. It became clear that SDGs are often neglected in political discourse. Nevertheless, it is emphasized that responsible consumption is the central goal of the SDGs, which also influences other goals, as highlighted in an analysis by PFZ.

In the context of the sustainability workshop, concrete steps were developed to address these challenges. There was a clear call to avoid competition between social and economic agendas and instead promote integrated policies that take into account all aspects of sustainable development.
