Museum Behnhaus celebrates reopening after 14 million euro renovation!
After three years of intensive renovation, the renowned Behnhaus Museum in Lübeck's old town will reopen on November 1, 2025. This will be celebrated with a reception for invited guests, while from November 2nd the general public will also be able to explore the new premises. The n-tv reports that during the extensive renovation work not only fire protection and safety standards were modernized, but accessibility was also significantly improved. It was particularly important to those responsible to preserve the historical structure of the museum, which was built in 1783.
The Behnhaus, which was once built for the Lübeck wine merchant Peter Hinrich Tesdorpf, has seen several changes of ownership over the years. In 1920, the city of Lübeck took over the building to prevent it from being converted into a bank branch. The director at the time, Carl Georg Heise, established the house as a gallery for 19th and classical modern art, thereby giving the museum its orientation that is still valid today. It contains a variety of exhibits, including works such as Edvard Munch's painting "The Sons of Dr. Max Linde" from 1903.
Sustainability and investments
In total, the renovation costs amounted to around 14 million euros. This sum includes the repair of the adjacent Drägerhaus, which is scheduled to be completed by 2027. According to the Museum Association, museums and cultural heritage buildings must now develop sustainable strategies in order to do justice to climate protection. The Museums Association website emphasizes that sustainable construction and renovation are essential to achieve both economic and ecological goals. For example, renewable energy sources should be used while resource consumption should be reduced at the same time.
The integration of such sustainability strategies is increasingly becoming the norm, particularly in the construction and maintenance of museums. This means that in addition to structural aspects such as air conditioning, social factors such as visual comfort and accessibility must also be taken into account. These aspects were apparently successfully implemented in the renovation of the Behnhaus.
Cultural relevance and community connection
The Behnhaus Museum is not only a place for art and culture, but also plays an important role as a cultural center in Lübeck. It houses works of art ranging from the Romantic period to the early 20th century, attracting art lovers from across the region. This makes the Behnhaus a crucial part of cultural life, which, as in other cities, combines tradition and contemporary art.
The development of the Behnhaus is a prime example of how historic buildings can continue to find meaning in modern times by making them accessible to the public and adapting them to today's standards of safety and sustainability. The museum will not only be a place to remember the past, but also a living space for future generations in which culture and history thrive.
The reopening of the museum is not only a return to its old splendor, but also a step towards a sustainable and responsible future. This not only pleases the many art lovers, but also helps to raise awareness of the important role that such institutions play in our society.
