Promote diversity: New campaign for harmony started in Altona!
On September 2, 2025, Hamburg will be all about diversity and social cohesion. A campaign launched in November 2022 aims to make the city's colorful diversity more visible. The idea came about at a meeting between the district administration and the Evangelical Church and is open to all religious communities. The aim is to support and network actors who are committed to harmonious coexistence. Hamburg.de reports that this initiative is particularly important in multicultural communities.
The target group of the campaign is everyone who actively contributes to diversity, be it through interreligious dialogues, district festivals or cultural festivals. The diverse places that contribute to this cohesion include community centers, cultural centers, religious institutions and sports clubs. A list of institutions that promote diversity should be provided in order to offer these actors a platform. This list will not be static but will grow and evolve over time.
Interreligious dialogues as a key to integration
Interreligious dialogues play an outstanding role in building shared understanding in pluralistic societies. People from different religious backgrounds come together to discover commonalities and overcome conflicts. Brill.de highlights that such dialogues not only help reduce prejudice, but also create a better understanding of different faiths.
In Germany, interreligious dialogues have their origins in the 1950s. Christian-Muslim dialogue has intensified, particularly after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The federal government is promoting these initiatives as part of its integration and security strategy. The focus is on shared values and improving social coexistence.
Strategies to promote diversity in cities
Promoting diversity in cities is of central importance not only in Hamburg, but also in other cities. A study has shown that tailored strategies for intercultural exchange can strengthen social cohesion. The measures range from improving educational opportunities to initiating dialogues between different communities. Wissenatlas.de offers good examples from various cities such as Mechelen, Leicester and Barcelona.
Important recommendations for cities to strengthen cultural diversity include, among other things, creating meeting spaces that promote exchange and committing to treating different cultures with respect. This is the only way to anchor a genuine commitment to harmonious coexistence in our society.
With all of these initiatives and strategies, Hamburg shows that it is a city that not only tolerates diversity, but actively lives and promotes it. Whether through interreligious dialogues or community projects – the Hanseatic city sets a good example and inspires other cities to take similar paths.
