Two Lithuanians sentenced to years in prison for luxury car theft!
The latest developments in the case of the theft of luxury cars in Hamburg are causing a stir. Two men from Lithuania were recently convicted of aggravated gang theft. One of the defendants faces a whopping seven years, while the other gets away with just under five years in prison. The judges of the Hamburg Regional Court made these judgments due to their unscrupulous activities surrounding the embezzlement of high-quality vehicles.
The two men were arrested in Jenfeld in March after they stole a total of 20 luxury cars last year. These were stolen not only in Hamburg, but also in Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony. The number of unreported cases could be even higher because, according to police crime statistics, there is also an increase in stolen vehicles in Hamburg. Last year alone, the city recorded 975 vehicle thefts; The amount of damage per theft was above average at 29,432 euros.
High damage and lucrative business
The value of some of the stolen cars was over 100,000 euros. Overall, the damage is estimated at around two million euros. For each vehicle they were able to successfully bring abroad, the perpetrators received around 2,000 euros - a very lucrative deal that they apparently couldn't pass up.
Only three of the stolen vehicles were recovered, as evidenced by police records and reports. It turns out that despite the authorities' measures, crime in this area remains high. ADAC reports a general decrease in thefts in Germany - 14,162 comprehensively insured cars were stolen in 2023, which corresponds to a decrease compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, the damage remains enormous at 293 million euros.
Security remains an issue
The numbers illustrate how important it is for vehicle owners to pay attention to safety and protect their cars as best as possible. High-quality SUVs and upper mid-range models are particularly popular. Even though the number of thefts overall has fallen, the amount of damage per case remains alarming. In general, the theft of high-value vehicles means that motor vehicle insurers have to pay out more than 800,000 euros every day.
The case in Hamburg shows that there is also an urgent need for action locally. The convicted men not only caused serious damage with their actions, but also set an example of how necessary comprehensive prevention is in the area of vehicle theft. The police and local authorities are now faced with the challenge of tackling such crimes even more effectively.
