Mobility week highlights Wandsbek: picnic areas instead of parking spaces!

Hamburg is in the starting blocks for this year's European Mobility Week. From September 16th to 30th, many streets and squares in the Hanseatic city will be transformed into a stage for sustainable mobility. The city expects lively participation as citizens actively engage with environmentally friendly means of transport and numerous exciting activities await them. hamburg.de reports that the streets will be temporarily redesigned and parking lots will be transformed into cozy picnic areas. The focus here is clearly on footpaths and cycle paths that invite citizens to explore their city in an environmentally friendly way.

But that's not all! Participants have the opportunity to test silent electric vehicles and in this way experience the diverse options for sustainable mobility up close. A central highlight of the campaign week is the big “Mobility for All” scavenger hunt. At this rally, participants can discover exciting project stations in all districts and collect stamps with the help of a special flyer, which they can download from the district offices or online.

Rally and prizes

The conditions for participation in the rally are simple: go through the city with the flyer, answer questions at the stations and collect at least two stamps. Anyone who manages to do this has the chance to win attractive prizes, which can be picked up at the district offices until October 14, 2025. The city uses digital channels such as the Radkultur homepage and the city Instagram accounts to provide information about the campaigns and motivate citizens to participate.

But European Mobility Week is not just an issue in Hamburg. Over 2,000 cities and municipalities in Europe are currently enabling similar campaigns. According to the Federal Environment Agency, 93 cities and municipalities in Germany are taking part, with the program items being developed together with citizens. In Dortmund, for example, experiences with switching to climate-friendly means of transport are reported. Umweltbundesamt.de has found that creative activities are taking place in many cities - from an online webinar in Dresden to a podcast in Würzburg, which also allows the mayor to have his say.

A step into the future

The overarching goal of European Mobility Week is to promote sustainable mobility in cities and communities while at the same time raising awareness of the need for climate protection in transport. Great importance is also placed on child and youth mobility in North Rhine-Westphalia, where the EMW 2025 has the motto “EMW sets a school”. Schools are called upon to actively participate and develop projects that primarily focus on the journey to school. schulministerium.nrw highlights that the patronage of School Minister Dorothee Feller and Transport Minister Oliver Krischer is to promote the mobility of children and parents.

Overall, the invitation to all Hamburg residents is: Discover new ways of mobility and actively shape a more sustainable future. European Mobility Week offers an excellent opportunity to rethink your own mobility style and work on important goals in the community.
