Timo Schultz starts at VfL Osnabrück: the way to the sleeping giant!

Osnabrück, Deutschland - Timo Schultz is the new coach of VfL Osnabrück! Borussia Mönchengladbach, look: The ambitious coach was officially presented on June 17, 2025. Managing Director Michael Welling and sports director Joe Enochs were present at the presentation, both of whom were clearly supporting the decision. Schultz, who wants to lead the team into a better future, brings a breath of fresh air and a clear plan. "I feel like the task," revealed the trainer, who even described the club as a "sleeping giant" and compared it to FC St. Pauli from 15 to 20 years ago when he was also looking for his identity.

After Marco Antwerp was divorced from office about two and a half weeks ago, VfL searched for a new head coach. Antwerp supported the team in December 2024 in relegation, but the serious “atmospheric disorders” with parts of the team led to his release. In this context, Antwerp has filed a lawsuit against his termination without notice, which could possibly result in an arbitration procedure for the DFB.

an experienced trainer with many qualities

Timo Schultz was previously coach of FC St. Pauli from July 2020 to December 2022 and celebrated success with a point cut of 1.45 in 92 missions. His other career led him to FC Basel, where he worked in 11 games, and later he took over 1. FC Köln. There, however, he was unable to avert the descent from the Bundesliga and was released after 18 games. Despite these setbacks, Schultz is optimistic. His experiences are diverse: he has worked both in the youth performance center and in the senior sector and is considered a pioneer for dynamic, offensive football, characterized by high willingness to run and intensive pressing.

It is particularly interesting that Schultz, as an active player, already played 16 games against VfL Osnabrück and thus also knows the team from the opposing perspective. Sports director Joe Enochs emphasizes that Schultz fits the association's profile both humanally and in terms of sport. The new trainer was very satisfied with this positive chemistry with the club representatives.

The challenges for the future

Schultz is determined to pick the raisins of the 3rd league and has no intention to "manage two years 3rd league". He strives for an ambitious vision for the club and wants to further develop the team with its expertise. VfL Osnabrück has found a trainer with him who wants to dare the long overdue departure - the prerequisites for this. So the audience in Osnabrück can hope for an exciting next season in which the trade fairs are far from read.
