Hamburg offers warm places to sleep: winter emergency program starts now!

Hamburg's cold winter is just around the corner, and the city's winter emergency program is opening its doors to homeless people again just in time for November. The urban overnight locations and living containers will be available immediately - they not only offer a warm place to sleep, but also a comprehensive package of supporting services. Around 700 people can feel safe in two- and three-bed rooms between 5:00 p.m. and 9:30 a.m. star reports that accommodation in Hammerbrook and Moorfleet are important refuges.

Social Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer makes it clear that no one in Hamburg has to sleep on the streets in winter. The facilities not only offer free beds and meals, but also washing machines, lockable cupboards and social advice. Last year, the emergency shelters enjoyed an occupancy rate of around 80 percent. A strict ban on alcohol and drugs ensures a safe atmosphere. There is also a shuttle service that takes guests from the main train station to the accommodation.

Where to put the living containers?

For those particularly in need, the city has also provided living containers that are open around the clock and can accommodate around 100 people. These are awarded by lottery, and the raffles for women, men and couples take place in the day-care centers: The women's raffle takes place in the bower and the men's raffle in the Diakonie on Wednesday, followed by the couples raffle one day later. The city has a good hand in implementing this – the concept is well thought out and works efficiently.

In view of the winter challenges, it is gratifying that there is a ray of hope for many in Hamburg. In a year in which not only local issues are in focus, but also international events such as the Coachella Music Festival with Billie Eilish as the headliner or the eagerly awaited Grammy Awards for Olivia Rodrigo, local social responsibility remains an indispensable part of our community life - an aspect that must not be lost sight of. Australia also provides interesting insights into other cities and what they have to offer.

With these measures, Hamburg is well equipped to face the challenges of the winter. After all, every helping hand counts and there is no “waiting for the miracle”; action must follow. Let's hope everyone who needs support finds the help they deserve.
