Help for Bergedorf: New recycling center is a long time coming!

In Hamburg-Bergedorf, residents are confronted with a stressful problem: long waiting times at the local recycling center. This is considered too small and outdated. Jörg Froh, representative of the CDU parliamentary group in Bergedorf, has been demanding a solution from the Hamburg environmental authority for some time. But planning for a new recycling center has been dragging on for six years.

The Environment Agency is currently examining two properties, one of which is close to the existing recycling center. Another property is still under discussion. Unfortunately, the authority cannot yet give a specific time frame for the completion of the new farm. So far, 545,000 euros have already been invested in the planning before the project on Randersweide had to be stopped due to unforeseeable costs. Critics, such as left-wing MP Stephan Jersch, complain that problems with the current site, which lies above a former gas storage facility, were recognized too late.

Debate in the district assembly

The district assembly plans to hold a debate about the predicament on Thursday. The residents are eagerly waiting for a solution to finally be found. Dissatisfaction is growing because anyone who regularly wants to hand in their used glass or waste paper at the recycling center is often confronted with long waiting times.

In Hamburg there are a total of twelve city cleaning recycling centers that accept a range of materials for free disposal. These include metals, plastics, wood, paper, green waste, glass, bulky waste and electronic waste. Materials that are subject to a fee, such as garden damage from one cubic meter or more, used oil and building rubble, must be treated separately. Those interested can find further information about prices and fees on the city cleaning website.

Opening times and locations

The recycling centers in Hamburg have different opening times, which enables flexible disposal. Here is an overview of some important locations:

  • Harburg, Neuländer Kamp 6: Mo – Fr: 8 – 19 Uhr, Sa: 8 – 17 Uhr
  • Bergedorf, Kampweg 9: Mo – Fr: 8 – 17 Uhr
  • St. Pauli, Feldstraße 69: Mo – Fr: 8 – 17 Uhr, Sa: 8 – 17 Uhr

  • Wandsbek, Wilma-Witte-Stieg 6: Mo – Fr: 8 – 19 Uhr, Sa: 8 – 17 Uhr

The city cleaning department also offers individual customer service and is committed to environmentally friendly disposal by specialist companies. Reusable items are passed on to second-hand department stores, which benefits sustainability.

The community will closely monitor how the search for a new location for the recycling center proceeds. Hopes are high that a solution will soon be found that will give the citizens of Bergedorf a better recycling experience. However, the uncertainty remains as to how long these plans will last.
