Bergedorf remains connected to long-distance transport: New trains to Berlin!

Good news for commuters and travelers in Hamburg: TheBergedorf train stationwill remain connected to the long-distance train network in the future. How NDR reports, Deutsche Bahn will offer a pair of trains to Berlin every day from May 2026. This connection starts in Bergedorf and first stops at Hamburg Central Station before continuing towards Berlin without any further stops.

However, travelers should not forget that this detour means around an hour more travel time. It is undisputed that the decision not to allow ICE trains to stop in Bergedorf after the general renovation caused a lot of fuss. The SPD member of the Bundestag Metin Hakverdi therefore actively campaigned and renegotiated. As a result of these discussions, there will now be a train to and from Berlin at 7 a.m. in the morning and shortly before 9 p.m. in the evening.

Transport connections and transfer options

Deutsche Bahn justifies the restrictions with the high utilization of the route and the lack of an overtaking track in Bergedorf. In order to avoid traffic disruptions, the railway specifically relies on the transfer hub in Büchen. Here, travelers will find better connections and overtaking opportunities, which ensures more flexibility on the route.

Erna, a Bergedorf resident who regularly commutes to Berlin, is pleased about the return of connections: “It's good business to finally be able to get to Berlin more comfortably again, even if it's a detour.” The possibility of changing directly to regional trains to Hamburg is also highlighted as positive.

Tickets and travel options

Those interested can use various methods to obtain tickets. No matter whether in DB Travel Center, at machines or online via the mobile app, the options are diverse. The ticket machines are available 24 hours a day at most stations and offer support in multiple languages, making ticket purchasing easier for all travelers.

In conclusion, it remains to be said that the developments on the railway line between Bergedorf and Berlin can provide positive impulses for both travelers and the city. It will be exciting to see how the new connections will prove themselves from May 2026.
