Energy sharing: Hamburg's new plan for a sustainable future!
An energy sharing project will start in Allermöhe in September 2025 to promote sustainable energy use and overcome challenges.

Energy sharing: Hamburg's new plan for a sustainable future!
In the heart of Hamburg, there is currently a lot of work being done on the future of energy consumption. Under the title “Energy sharing” the focus is on a concept that is more than just a buzzword. It is a collective use of renewable energies that has found fertile ground in recent months among the companies Gebr. Heinemann, Buderus, Dachser and Marx as well as among creative urban planning professionals and product designers. This innovative idea was launched at a kick-off meeting in February 2025 to pursue a common goal: a sustainable energy supply for everyone involved. The Hamburg Kreativ Gesellschaft moderated the entire process and ensured that the creative minds worked together towards the project.
An important step in this promising endeavor are the workshops that took place in April. Over a total of eight days, various scenarios - from the most severe resource shortages to an abundance of green energy - were discussed in detail. Such considerations are essential as they help to prepare for different future challenges. There were also questions about the shortage of skilled workers, connectivity and staff catering, which gave participants headaches.
Started with a clear focus
Essential to the success of the project is gathering team members around a common vision and mission. The principle of starting a project emphasizes the importance of getting everyone involved to commit to the same goal. For this purpose, creative statements on the vision, the mission and mission tests were developed in three groups, which were refined in a later discussion round. This structured approach is a clever way to ensure that the fundamentals of the project are firmly anchored within the team and can be adjusted later if the environment changes. As Atlassian emphasizes, involving all employees in this process is the key to long-term success.
The current focus is on developing a feasibility study for energy sharing that examines both economic and regulatory aspects. The extent to which heat pumps and battery storage can contribute to the energy supply is being investigated. Such an analysis is not only important for companies in Hamburg, but also sends a signal for the entire region, which wants to become more involved in the energy transition.
The theoretical basis and challenges
But what is energy sharing anyway? According to Umweltbundesamt, this refers to the collective production and use of electricity in a spatial context. This is done taking into account the public electricity grid and has the potential to promote the expansion of renewable energies. Despite these advantages, there is no uniform definition, which makes the concepts quite diverse and sometimes complex.
A particularly important aspect is the question of political support. To date, current EU law has not resulted in any obligation to promote energy sharing in German law. Nevertheless, the development in Hamburg is a positive example of broader participation in the energy transition, even if many details still need to be clarified. The specific contribution of these concepts to the overall goals has not yet been sufficiently investigated, which requires numerous further investigations.
Overall, it is clear that developments in the area of energy sharing are of great relevance not only for Hamburg, but for the entire energy transition in Germany. It will be exciting to see how these initiatives are implemented in practice and what positive effects they will have on the environment and society.
