New neighborhood hub in Altona: Sustainable mobility for everyone!

A new neighborhood hub is now being set up in Altona-Altstadt, and the first impression is promising! Dr. Stefanie von Berg, the Altona district office manager, has already described the project as a significant enrichment for the neighborhood. This hub, located at Holstenstrasse 20, could permanently change the image of the district by centrally bundling both social and cultural offerings and at the same time developing local solutions for traffic. This will help counteract the shortage of space on site hamburg.de reported.

The neighborhood hub is part of the EU-funded MOVE21 project and is being realized in a redesigned, empty building belonging to SAGA, a social housing company. Deutsche Bahn is responsible for operating the hub. The concept envisages mixed use that benefits both the commercial and public sectors. The logistics area of the hub is particularly exciting, as it is intended to create space for the reloading of packages and goods. Deliveries and collections from the neighborhood are carried out emission-free using electric cargo bikes. Companies such as GLS, Hermes and City Log will use synergies here, reports move21.eu.

Social and cultural offers

In the social area, a wide range of activities are offered to residents. A “social service and advice center” will be set up together with the Altona district social worker team, the Karin and Walter Blüchert Foundation and Dein Topf e.V. Here residents can receive support with financial questions, rental matters and training. The hub will also act as a distribution point for food and supplies for those in need, which should be a real bright spot for many neighbors. A kiosk will be open from Friday to Sunday and will offer basic necessities and hot meals.

But that's not all! Further social and cultural offerings are to be developed together with the residents. Ideas for personal mobility solutions are also developed through collaboration with SAGA and other local actors in a participatory process. The main goal here is to promote sustainable forms of mobility and to improve existing offers in the district, such as move21.eu supplemented.

A project with a future

The district hub will initially be operated as an interim use, and it remains exciting to see what impulses it will have on the district. Ultimately, this is a pilot project whose offerings will be tested and further developed in order to refine the concept for future permanent solutions and other projects in other parts of Hamburg. In this sense, the district hub in Altona-Altstadt is more than just a space - it could turn out to be a real heart of the district.
