New mayor for great berries: Who will be the successor to Borstel?
New mayor for great berries: Who will be the successor to Borstel?
in Großbeeren, a charming community in the district of Teltow-Fläming, is bubbling hard: This Sunday, July 6, 2025, a new mayor is elected. The reason for this election is the election of ex-mayor Tobias Borstel, who had to clear his position in March. The municipal council had decided to vote out a citizens' decision, but Borstel waived the vote of the citizens and was therefore voted off. He had the scepter in his hand since 2018.
around 7,532 residents who are entitled to vote can set their cross today in order to give the new leadership their trust. This absolute number is good compared to the total population of around 9,648 people (as of April 2024), but still significantly below what is needed in the community to achieve a stable election results. And that cannot be neglected, because so that a choice is valid, at least 15 percent of those entitled to vote, i.e. 1,130 votes, must be submitted to a candidate.
candidates in the race
The voters in Greater Berries are spoiled for choice between five candidates:
- Martin Wonneberger (CDU)
- Dirk Steinhausen (WFG)
- Bettina Stobbe (Greens)
- Klaus Meyer (UGDS)
- Peter Silke (AfD)
The more votes each candidate gets, the more exciting the result becomes. However, if no applicant crack the 50 percent mark, the runoff election is due on July 20. The choice of election could therefore take some time.
election organization
A total of eight polling stations were set up in the municipality for the election. These open at 8 a.m. and close at 6 p.m., with the 77 volunteers start with the counting of the votes at 6 p.m. A very special note for the voters: In order to be able to participate in the election, you should bring your election notification and ID card, be it a passport or ID card.Applications for postal voting have also increased: already 1,434 applications reached the municipal administration one week before the deadline. Brief voters may submit their ballot in the town hall until late afternoon at 6 p.m. to ensure that their voice is counted.
political situation and views
The political landscape in Brandenburg is currently presenting itself as challenging. According to n-tv , the AfD achieved the strongest position in its last election, while SPD, Linke and the Greens lost influence. The CDU also recorded light growth, but is still far behind the AfD. These developments are particularly important for large berries, since the upcoming mayoral election could significantly influence the direction of the community.
It remains to be seen whether the new leadership of the community has grown to the challenges. What is certain is that the political surf is currently coming to large berries. A live ticker of the Maz will publish current events and the first election results from 6 p.m. The citizens are therefore called for conscientiously submitting their ballot paper and thus actively participating in the design of their future.
