Eimsbüttel in excitement: Schulstrasse is delayed because of parking spaces!

A car-free school street in front of the Rellinger Straße primary school is currently being discussed in Eimsbüttel. After long planning, this renovation should finally become reality. But the joy about this could be clouded because the measure would result in the loss of 28 parking spaces. This causes disagreement, because not only parents' initiatives, but also transport associations are campaigning for the school street, which is intended to ensure road safety for school children. NDR reports that the renovation of Rellinger Straße was planned before the summer holidays, but the implementation is now in jeopardy.

A central concern is to convert Rellinger Straße between Spengelweg and Grädenerstraße into a pedestrian zone that is only accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles. According to the authorities, this is intended to increase the value of living in the neighborhood and offer children a safe route to school. However, there have been delays recently: A “Parking Master Plan” planned in the coalition agreement since 2023 is slowing down the mobility transition, as all existing parking spaces are protected species and conversion work is excluded. This initiative was launched by a strong alliance of parents' council and road users with the aim of creating more space for cycle paths, benches, trees and production areas for play opportunities. Road safety and quality of life are at the top of the agenda. It remains to be seen whether the authorities will soon give the project the green light or whether Hamburg's parking policy will suddenly change so that the conversion can be pursued as quickly as possible.

The future of the planned school street remains uncertain, but the citizens' hopes are high. The “Walk to School” initiative sees Schulstrasse as a step in the right direction. The parents of the primary school are also disappointed about the delay after intensive citizen participation. They hope that the renovation will be carried out quickly despite the difficult situation in order to offer school children a safe and pleasant way to school.
