U3 in Hamburg: Back into operation after two weeks of closure!
The Hamburg subway line 3 is fully back into operation and now runs completely again after the route between the town hall and St. Pauli was closed for two weeks. This restriction began on June 20 and ended on Friday morning, July 4th. According to the NDR, necessary construction work was carried out to renew the infrastructure and maintain the high security standard of the Hamburg subway network.
A total of impressive 620 meters of tracks and 790 thresholds were renewed. Five stops were affected by the blocking: Rathaus, Rödingsmarkt, Baumwall (near the Elbphilharmonie), Landungsbrücken and St. Pauli. During this time there was no replacement traffic by bus, which is why passengers were recommended to use other expressway and bus lines and to find out about alternative routes on the website or in the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV).
construction work and infrastructure
These construction work was necessary to improve the existing infrastructure and ensure that the U3, one of the oldest subway lines in Germany, will continue to work smoothly in the future. The construction of the U3 started in 1906, and its commissioning took place in 1912. Hamburger Hochbahn AG emphasizes the importance of such work to maintain and improve the subway network. According to Hochbahn, passengers should put on other lines during the closures to optimize their trips.
Painful passengers in the Volksdorf area had had to use replacement traffic since Monday after another section of the U3 is closed until November. This is a measure that is part of a larger renovation project that has been the focus of reporting in recent months.
The effects on the infrastructure
In Berlin, the discussion about major projects and their influence on the subway infrastructure could give a warning example. According to TAZ, concern is growing that construction projects such as the conversion of the Karstadt building on Hermannplatz and the associated development could mean new challenges for subway lines. The BVG and the transport administration warn of possible impairments that can result from construction work in the underground area, which shows how important maintenance work is carried out regularly on the subway lines.
However, the resumption of the complete operation on the U3 is a positive sign for the Hamburgers who can look forward to returning to normality. In addition, two hobby photographers have impressively documented the stations of the U3 and created a photo series and a film to capture the beauty and history of the route.
We can be excited to see how the construction work will develop in the coming months and hope for a continued safe and reliable subway connection in our beautiful city. The U3 not only remains an important means of transport, but also a piece of Hamburg's history.
