FC St. Pauli loses top scorer Guilavogui to RC Lens!
A change that makes waves: FC St. Pauli has to part with its valuable loan player Morgan Guilavogui. The striker, who was recently signed from RC Lens for three million euros, will make his way back to the French club. Both clubs have already officially confirmed this and the buyback option has been activated. This amounts to an impressive 4.5 million euros, making Guilavogui one of the most expensive sales in the history of FC St. Pauli, on a par with the transfer of Daniel-Kofi Kyereh to SC Freiburg in 2022.
Sports director Andreas Bornemann was positive about the situation and praised both Guilavogui's sporting and human qualities. “He has fit in very well with our team,” said Bornemann. However, he is critical of the final decision-making process regarding Guilavogui's whereabouts, as it was not at FC St. Pauli. Only the buyback option in the player's contract allowed Lens to bring him back. Guilavogui was a valuable addition for St. Pauli, scoring six goals in the last Bundesliga season.
A record transfer in the club's history
With the transfer of Guilavogui, Hamburg set a new record for the most expensive new signing. Previously, this was defined by the purchase of Uğur İnceman, for about 1.3 million euros in 2001. Guilavogui's return to Lens comes on the back of his outstanding performances, which were also recognized by Jean-Louis Leca, sporting director of RC Lens. He described the return as a “great opportunity” and highlighted the player’s versatility, mentality and experience.
Guilavogui's return will certainly be followed with excitement not only in Hamburg, but also in Lens. FC St. Pauli fans now have to prepare for new challenges and hope that the club can find suitable alternatives with the remaining budget, which results from a loss of 750,000 euros in the current transfer window. In the current season, FC St. Pauli has spent a total of 2.25 million euros on transfers.
What will happen next for FC St. Pauli remains exciting. Player changes bring a breath of fresh air, but losing top performers is always a fine line. Maybe a new reinforcement will soon come out of the hat that will put a smile on the fans' faces.
