Berkay Demirci back at FC St. Pauli – title hunt begins now!
After two years at SV Werder Bremen, Berkay Demirci is returning to FC St. Pauli, where he wants to once again pursue his ambitions of winning the title. At his presentation in Bremen in 2023, he explained that his goal was to “bring titles to the Weser”. However, after parting ways with Werder, he is now eager to be successful with St. Pauli. Christian Oberlies, Head of Gaming & Esports at Heiligengeistfeld, highlights the immense quality that Demirci brings to the team and is convinced that he will help strengthen the team. All the more so because FC St. Pauli only finished 13th in the North-West Division of the Virtual Bundesliga Club Championship (VBLCC) last season and clearly could not meet their own expectations.
Together with his former teammate Kamal Kamboj, Demirci will ensure that the fans can hope for better times again. Kamboj has already spoken enthusiastically about Demirci's return, describing him as a great asset to the team. The two teammates had already worked together successfully in the 2022/23 season and made it to the final event of the VBLCC, where they were eliminated in the semi-finals against Hansa Rostock.
Demirci as VBL runner-up
Demirci's individual achievements speak for themselves. Last year he even became German VBL runner-up in 2023 and delivered impressive performances in both the regular season and the Grand Final. In a thrilling final against Antonio Radelja from Frankfurt, Demirci led for a while, but ultimately could not avert a 3-1 defeat. “Despite the defeat, it was an exciting tournament and I am proud of my achievements,” said Demirci after the final.
It is particularly worth mentioning that Kamboj also played strongly in this tournament and Oberlies, the coordinator for eFootball at FC St. Pauli, described the emotional embrace between the two after the final as touching. The positive atmosphere in the team could help FC St. Pauli get back on the road to success next season.
The history of the eSport team
Since the esports team was founded in 2020, FC St. Pauli has already experienced some ups and downs. The team has continuously developed with various player changes and participation in numerous competitions. The past successes are reflected in various placements and prize money, including first place and second place in A-tier tournaments, each of which was rewarded with considerable prizes.
Now, with Demirci in the team, there is a good chance that St. Pauli will put their previous failures in the VBLCC behind them. The club has set itself the goal of not only becoming stronger in the league, but also building on the successes of previous seasons. So it remains to be seen how the well-rehearsed team of Demirci and Kamboj will perform in the new season.
There is much reason for hope in this latest episode of club life. Fans who have already come to appreciate Demirci during his first time at the club can look forward to the upcoming games and an exciting competition with an even stronger player community at Heiligengeistfeld.
