Jazz delight in Hamburg: Kamasi Washington and Amos Lee live!
In Hamburg at the moment everything revolves around music, especially jazz. This week the city brings two outstanding American artists to the stages: Kamasi Washington and Amos Lee. Both will be playing on July 21st, in what promises to be a real feast for music lovers. Washington will perform at the Fabrik, while Amos Lee will present his blend of jazz, soul and blues at the Mojo Club. The Evening paper reports that Washington is known as one of the greatest jazz saxophonists of our time.
But who is Kamasi Washington actually? Born in Los Angeles in 1981, the artist has had a lasting impact on the music scene with his haunting playing and stylistic diversity. After training at the Academy of Music in Beverlywood and studying ethnomusicology at UCLA, he performed with greats such as Kendrick Lamar, among others. His debut solo album The Epic, released in 2015, catapulted him into the spotlight and cemented his reputation in the jazz world. Washington's influence extends far beyond the genre, like the Wikipedia thoroughly describes.
Week full of cultural highlights
In addition to the concerts by the two jazz stars, Hamburg has a lot of cultural events to offer this week. The group exhibition “Art in the Garden” opens its doors in Kirchdorf on July 20th. It shows the works of ten talented cultural workers and admission is free! For those interested in history, it is worth visiting the exhibition “Want to Know Everything” in the Helmut Schmidt Forum. The Stasi's methods for monitoring Helmut Schmidt will be shown there until September 3rd - also with free admission.
The Ernst Deutsch Theater is bringing the cross-disciplinary project “We are made of threads” to the stage on July 24th, and the Hamburger Sprachwerk is showing the play “Bodyrule” from July 25th to 27th. Here, viewers can budget between 22 and 24 euros for the tickets. Last but not least, the Neustadt festival “Urban Moves 25” on July 26th offers music and art up close and is aimed at everyone who wants an interactive experience.
