13 train stations in Brandenburg: future train stations for more comfort!

A lot will be happening at the train stations around Hamburg! Deutsche Bahn has announced large-scale modernizations that are intended to increase both the comfort and attractiveness of rail travel. During the upcoming renovation of the important train route between Berlin and Hamburg, which will last from August 2025 to April 2026, 13 train stations in Brandenburg will be examined and some of them completely rebuilt. The initiative comes from the rail infrastructure company Infrago.

The affected stations include Falkensee, Nauen and Wittenberge. Eleven of these stations will be converted into so-called future stations, as part of a comprehensive strategy by Deutsche Bahn, which wants to upgrade a total of 100 stations nationwide by 2025. The aim is to create a uniform design and adapt it to modern needs in order to offer travelers a more attractive experience. What will change for travelers?

Future train stations offer numerous improvements designed to make waiting for the train more pleasant. This includes more weather protection, modern waiting furniture, improved traveler information and greater accessibility. In addition, the lighting is increased to a more environmentally friendly level. The space for bicycles will also be optimized so that environmentally conscious travelers can park their bikes better.

Project manager Adrian Bernhardt from DB Infrago emphasizes that the modernization will now be more comprehensive. The goal is not only to preserve the stations, but also to redesign them according to uniform quality standards (Deutsche Bahn). As early as 2024, 113 train stations will have received this increase in quality and will now bear the Future Station label, which is intended to increase the attractiveness of the stations.

The reform of station modernization

The modernizations are based on the amended Federal Railway Expansion Act (BSWAG). It allows the station buildings to be integrated into the financing logic, ensuring a significant improvement in the rail infrastructure. This has been a problem for a long time, as the financing to date has often been small-scale and has not made big leaps possible. Now the quality and identity of the stations should go hand in hand. Ralf Thieme, board member of DB InfraGO, sees great development potential and would like to promote the diversity and functionality of the stations (Zukunftsnetzwerk ÖPNV).

For passengers, this not only means a visual upgrade, but also a functional improvement. The old image of dusty train stations is being broken down and instead a modern ambience is created that reflects the region.

The upcoming construction work is not only a sign of change, but also important news for commuters and travelers: Deutsche Bahn shows that it is ready to invest in the future of travel. With over 30,000 daily passengers on the Berlin-Hamburg route, this is also urgently needed in order to meet the demands of the time.
