A7: Complete closure in the Elbtunnel – This is how it affects your traffic!
Once again, things will be tight on the A7 in Hamburg for a long time: Due to extensive construction work, the motorway will be completely closed for 55 hours at the beginning of next month. This affects the section between the Stellingen and Heimfeld junctions as well as the Elbe tunnel. The exact period for the closure is from Friday 7th November at 10pm to Monday 10th November at 5am. From Friday at 9 p.m., the driveways in Stellingen, Volkspark, Bahrenfeld, Othmarschen, Waltershof and Heimfeld will also be closed, making travel on the designated diversion routes even more difficult. NDR reports.
The closures are necessary to install new traffic sign gantries and test the tunnel control center. The authorities promise large-scale diversions via the A1, A21 and B205. Travelers from the south will be redirected onto the A1 from the Buchholzer triangle/Horster triangle via the AK Maschener Kreuz, while those from the north will be redirected via the B205 from the Neumünster-Süd junction. Especially for large-capacity and heavy-duty transport, it is important to note that passage in both directions is not possible.
Expect traffic jams and disruptions
During the closure, significant traffic jams and delays are to be expected on the diversion routes. The A7 is known for its high traffic density, especially on the section between Waltershof and Volkspark, where over 130,000 vehicles travel every day. Anyone planning to travel to Hamburg Airport should start in good time or consider switching to public transport to avoid losing time during diversions, such as ADAC explains.
However, the authorities are not accepting the inconvenience caused by the closures presented without reason. The construction sites are related to the expansion of the A7 to eight lanes and improved noise protection, with the Altona noise protection tunnel expected to be completed by 2028. The transport company expects further complete closures of the Elbe Tunnel in order to continue the work as planned. There will be another full closure from December 5th to 8th, 2025, with the same rhythm from Fridays at 10 p.m. to Mondays at 5 a.m. These measures are part of a long-term strategy to improve transport infrastructure and increase road safety on this busy highway.
Commuters, business travelers and all other road users now need to closely monitor the traffic situation in and around Hamburg so as not to experience any unpleasant surprises. Current information about the traffic situation is updated regularly so that everyone affected can stay well informed. We hope that the necessary work will be carried out quickly and without major complications so that traffic can flow smoothly again soon.
