Conversion of the Eppendorfer marketplace: Bau starts on July 7th!

Something will soon happen in Eppendorf: the conversion of the Eppendorfer marketplace is just around the corner. On July 7, 2025, the construction work, which is expected to take one and a half years. The aim of the project is to improve the traffic situation in this popular district. According to NDR should be reduced and the space for pedestrians and cyclists is to be significantly enlarged.

The Eppendorfer marketplace is already known for its confusing traffic conditions. There is a lack of space for pedestrians and cyclists, while the infrastructure for public transport does not meet the most modern standards. These grievances are also the reason why the Landesbetrieb Street, bridges and waters (LSBG) has been working on a redesign concept since 2017. By including residents and passers -by in various participation procedures, numerous suggestions and needs were collected that have been incorporated into the planning. The finishing touches came through adjustments to the Radescheid, which were incorporated in the course of the latest developments.

What exactly is changed?

In the first construction phases, temporary lanes are set up and some traffic islands are broken down. The main traffic streets such as Martinnistraße, Eppendorfer Marktplatz, Ludolfstraße and Heinickestraße will be difficult to drive during the construction period, since closures, diversions and replacement stops are necessary for buses. Despite these measures, there is at least one lane per direction during the main traffic times in order not to lose the accessibility completely.

The renovation project is pursuing a clear strategy that is also anchored as part of the Mobility Wende to 2030. This not only increases the quality of stay of the marketplace, but also better linked the different types of traffic. The aim is to offer pedestrians, cyclists and local public transport more space and security.

A look into the future

With the implementation of such projects, Hamburg is not alone. In the entire urban area, millions flow into improvement in the infrastructure. Public transport is being made more future-proof, whereby the focus is on the expansion of the S- and U-Bahn network in particular by 2030. In order to meet the challenges and achieve the climate goals, innovative ideas are required that increase the quality of life in the districts.

The redesign of the Eppendorfer marketplace is an important step in this direction. The commitment of the residents and the positive feedback from the public gives the city the necessary backing to successfully advance the renovation. At the end of the project, Eppendorf could not only be better positioned in terms of traffic, but also a more attractive place to linger.
