Passenger attack on the train: Federal police officer averts violence!

An incident on the EC172 from Berlin to Hamburg caused a stir on Friday evening, June 6, 2025. At around 7:05 p.m., the train attendant, a 43-year-old, discovered during the ticket inspection that a 27-year-old passenger, an Italian citizen, could not produce a valid ticket. The train attendant then asked a federal police officer (44 years old) who was traveling with him for assistance in establishing his identity. The train stopped in Bergedorf; the passenger tried to escape through the open doors.

But his escape did not go unnoticed. The federal police officer stopped the man from escaping, whereupon he hit both the train conductor and the federal police officer several times. Despite the resistance, the federal police officer was able to bring the suspect to the ground and tie him up. Fortunately, neither the train attendant nor the federal police officer were injured. The train journey itself was not affected and the train continued as planned to Hamburg main station.

Arrest and consequences

After arriving in Hamburg, the tied man was handed over to a federal police patrol. A breath alcohol test showed a blood alcohol level of 0.82. The 27-year-old was released around 10 p.m. As a result, several criminal proceedings were initiated against him. These include, among other things, obtaining benefits by fraud, bodily harm and resistance and physical attacks on law enforcement officers.

The latest incidents shed light on the increasing violence on trains and at stations in Germany. According to reports from daily news There was an increase in physical injuries in 2024 compared to the previous year. Over 10,600 cases were registered in German train stations. The authorities reported around 2,661 attacks on trains on the open route by the end of October 2024.

Security measures and awareness

Deutsche Bahn is trying to counteract this problem. Over 200 million euros are invested annually in security measures, including the installation of more than 11,000 video cameras in train stations and over 50,000 cameras in regional and S-Bahn trains. These measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure the safety of the approximately 20 million travelers every day. The police, with around 6,000 officers, are constantly deployed at the train stations.

Although the incident in Bergedorf ended lightly, the question remains as to how we as a society deal with the increasing violence in public transport. Is it time to take more intensive action or increase traveler awareness? While the investigation into the current case is still ongoing, it remains to be seen what lessons can be learned from it.
