Important S-Bahn changes: closure between the main station and Sternschanze!

The Hamburg S-Bahn will be affected by extensive construction work in the coming weeks, which will make it necessary to adjust the timetables. Some important routes in our favorite port are under the sign of diversions and replacement services. Deutsche Bahn informs that the S-Bahn connection between Hamburg Central Station and Sternschanze will be closed from September 27th to October 6th, 2025. This temporary measure is necessary to ensure that the quality of the transport service can be maintained. Details about the closure and further information can be found on the [Deutsche Bahn] website (https://www.deutschebahn.com/de/presse/presse-regional/pr-hamburg-de/aktuell/presseinformationen-regional/Fahrplanaenderungen-im-S-Bahnverkehr-13561490).

In order to compensate for this closure, a replacement bus service will be set up between Hamburg main station and Sternschanze. This ensures that commuters and visitors can travel easily even during construction work. In addition, some Hamburg S-Bahn trains will be rerouted. The S2, which runs from Altona to Bergedorf/Aumühle and runs through the city tunnel at regular intervals during this time, is particularly affected. During peak hours, the S2 between Berliner Tor and Bergedorf is only offered to the destination and terminus station Diebsteich. To ensure a good service, trains run between Altona, Holstenstraße and Sternschanze every 20 minutes.

Changes to the subway and S-Bahn connections

However, the impact of the construction work does not end with the S-Bahn. There will also be changes on the U1 subway line. There is a closure between Berne and Volksdorf from mid-October to the end of November, also with replacement bus services. And that won't be it: From December to mid-December, a shuttle train will run between Niendorf Nord and Niendorf Markt every 15 to 20 minutes, with a change in Niendorf Markt required. The Hamburger Verkehrsverbund website also offers this information.

But the S1 also has its challenges: From November 29th to 30th there will also be a closure between Wedel and Klein Flottbek/Othmarschen, where buses will then be used instead of S-Bahn trains. The offer on the S-Bahn line S2 will also be interesting, which will also use buses instead of trains between Berliner Tor and Billwerder-Moorfleet between October 18th and November 2nd.

Construction work and its consequences

The Hamburg transport company is trying to make the new circumstances as comfortable as possible. There will also be a small innovation for the S2 in the near future: from December 14th it will be renamed S7. In the future, trains will run from Bergedorf/Aumühle via Jungfernstieg to Altona, thus serving another leading part of the city.

The U2 is also getting a new routine, where a shuttle train will run between Niendorf Nord and Niendorf Markt from December 1st to 18th. And here, too, as with the other lines, it is important to find out more in digital information media such as bahn.de or via the DB Navigator app before you start your journey in order to always be up to date. Because one thing is certain: There is something going on in our beautiful Hanseatic city, and no commuter should lose track of it!
