S-Bahn Hamburg: New S7 brings more clarity to train traffic!

From December 14, 2025, passengers on the Hamburg S-Bahn can look forward to a new line name. The S7 line is launched, but is not a completely new connection, but rather a renaming of existing trains. The S7 trains will travel from Aumühle and Bergedorf through the city tunnel to Altona. This change should not only provide more clarity, but also offer travelers better orientation, says Jan Schröder, Managing Director of S-Bahn Hamburg. The changes were introduced primarily at the request of passengers who wanted routes to be clearly marked, reported bahnblogstelle.com.

What exactly is changing? The new S7 trains connect the Jungfernstieg, Stadthausbrücke, Landungsbrücken, Reeperbahn and Königstraße stops. The connecting line also stops on the return journey from Altona to Bergedorf/Aumühle, as well as stations such as Holstenstraße, Sternschanze, Dammtor and the main train station. However, the S2 will continue to operate as a clock amplifier every five minutes between Bergedorf, Aumühle and Altona, Deutsche Bahn confirms in its press release. The S2 stops are Dammtor, Sternschanze, Holstenstraße and Diebsteich.

Background of the changes

The reason for the introduction of the S7 is construction work in Altona, which has been affecting rail traffic since the summer. The track from Holstenstrasse to Altona is currently closed due to this work; the renovation work on the Holstenstrasse railway bridge is expected to last until the end of December 2025. The frequency of the trains remains unchanged, and the number of daily trips, which is around 1,300 on weekdays, also remains the same. The S2 and the new S7 will be clearly marked both on the digital display boards at the stations and in the timetables, with the S7 appearing in a striking dark yellow, as Deutsche Bahn explains.

With this innovation, the Hamburg S-Bahn not only wants to support travelers, but also optimize the flow of traffic in the city. With a “good hand”, those responsible are relying on greater clarity and better comprehensibility for all passengers on the Hamburg S-Bahn network. The commitment to continually improving public transport in Hamburg remains one of the main priorities of the S-Bahn Hamburg, according to the assessment German railways.
