Altona-Nord train station: Timetable changes bring uncertainty for commuters!
On December 14, 2023, there will be a significant timetable change in the Pinneberg district, which will change a lot for commuters and travelers. As the shz.de reports, the current construction work on the new Altona-Nord train station is leading to profound changes in train traffic, especially for the popular Nordbahn lines RB 61 and RB 71.
The completion of the Altona-Nord train station near Diebsteich, which is planned for the end of 2029, means that the lines mentioned will no longer stop in Hamburg-Altona during this time. After the opening of the new station, the regional express lines RE 7 and RE 70 will also stop there and offer an additional connection to Hamburg Central Station, where two RE and two RB trains are currently running per hour.
Changes in commuter traffic
An important point of the timetable change is the reduction in capacity for commuters from Tornesch to Hamburg-Altona. Loud holsteiner- Allgemeine.de The number of available seats drops by a whopping 29 percent, especially in the morning peak times - from 899 to 640. The specific connection with the RB 71 at 7:09 a.m., which currently offers 320 seats, will be replaced by the new RB 60, which only has simple traction with 320 seats.
The travel time from Tornesch to Altona is also significantly longer. While the current connection only takes 18 minutes, the new route, which requires a change in Pinneberg, could take up to 38 minutes. In addition, there is no train from Tornesch to Altona for a total of eight hours between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., which makes the situation even more difficult for commuters.
A look into the future
The current situation is part of a larger modernization program by Deutsche Bahn, which is scheduled to last until 2036. The adac.de points out that numerous construction sites are planned nationwide that will impact train traffic. These changes also include extensive route closures and timetable changes, which many commuters find necessary but also challenging.
It remains to be seen how the situation will develop after Altona-Nord opens. Until then, commuters are well advised to find out about the new travel times and the changed capacities to ensure a smooth journey to work.
At the end of the day, it does make commuting to Hamburg a little more complicated, but with a little planning and the new connections - especially the fast connections to Hamburg Central Station and Dammtor - hopefully many travelers will be well served.
