Winter chaos in Hamburg: Slippery roads cause numerous accidents!
Winter is in full swing in Hamburg, with all its unpleasant side effects. Snowfall has brought the Hanseatic city to a standstill since January 2, 2026. Caution is advised on the roads as the black ice has already caused numerous accidents. The police recorded a total of around 300 weather-related operations on Friday, including several serious incidents with injuries. The life-threatening injury of a man in Rothenburgsort by a truck was particularly tragic.
The city cleaning service is on alert. In an impressive show of strength, around 720 emergency services and around 360 vehicles are now ready to ensure safety on the roads. The team is also supported by colleagues from garbage collection. Despite this preparation, there was a frightening accumulation of accidents and traffic jams on Friday, spread over a total of more than 150 kilometers. The A1, which had three and a half hours of traffic jams, and the A7, which had to be temporarily closed due to extremely slippery conditions, were particularly affected.
Winter service and traffic
The weather situation not only affects the roads, but also air traffic. There were several delays and around 20 canceled flights at Hamburg Airport as the amount of snow led to difficult conditions. Similar problems were also reported at other airports, such as Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, where hundreds of flights were affected. The winter chaos has affected many people across Germany, among other things daily news reported.
The S-Bahn and bus lines are also struggling: all lines are affected by weather-related problems. Traffic jams are the norm, especially in ports and on highways. On Friday, the Köhlbrand Bridge was closed in both directions because a truck standing across it caused additional complications. The message for road users is to keep their eyes open and pay attention to the risk of slippery roads!
Weather warnings and further developments
Meteorologists warn of persistent snowfall and cold snaps. The combination of snow showers and freezing wet conditions continues to create dangerous conditions on the roads. Residents are also required to properly clear the sidewalks in front of their properties to ensure pedestrian safety.
The fire department also had its hands full: over 120 weather-related missions had to be managed. For example, the roof of a tennis hall in Osdorf collapsed under the weight of snow, fortunately without anyone being injured. A roof fire in Iserbrook, caused by a suspected lightning strike, also shows the challenges the city is facing. Hamburg has thus experienced a major winter outbreak, which also requires support from numerous other relief workers in order to cope with the situation.
While large parts of Germany are affected by this onset of winter, it is particularly important for people in Hamburg to be careful when traveling. City authorities are aware of the situation and are working on solutions to improve traffic conditions and guarantee the safety of all road users. Everyone should now have a good hand and adapt to the winter conditions.
