Bathing fun guaranteed: Hamburg's outdoor pools open despite a lack of staff!
There is good news for all sun worshipers and water lovers in Hamburg: the outdoor pools have been open since Thursday, June 12, 2025, with consistently pleasant weather. Loud Radio Hamburg The Kaifu-Bad in Eimsbüttel and the Stadtparksee natural pool can already welcome their visitors. On Friday, June 13th, the summer outdoor pools in Billstedt, Bondenwald, Finkenwerder, Neugraben, Osdorfer Born and Marienhöhe will follow. The year-round outdoor pools in Bergedorf, Rahlstedt, Altona (mainland), Holthusenbad and Parkbad in Volksdorf are also open as usual.
But not everything is going smoothly in the Hamburg baths. Due to a lack of staff, the Neugraben and Osdorfer Born outdoor pools have to close on certain days, according to the local news platform 24Hamburg reported. The municipal operating company Bäderland, which was founded in 1995 and currently operates 27 indoor and outdoor swimming pools, is struggling with a difficult personnel situation. There is a particular shortage of lifeguards and skilled workers, and the energy crisis has added to the challenges.
Closing days and energy savings
Some swimming pools even close two days a week. These include the Bille-Bad on Monday and Tuesday as well as the Volksdorf Parkbad and Süderelbe on the same days. The Billstedter Bad remains closed on Mondays and Thursdays. When it comes to energy costs, measures are already in place: outdoor pools are not heated and pool temperatures are reduced.
