Hamburg's S-Bahn becomes the digital future: an expansion for everyone!
Hamburg heads for an exciting time in public transport. In the next two decades, a comprehensive expansion of the S-Bahn network is on the plan, which is intended to enhance the mobility offer in the city. The goal: a more powerful public transport for the constantly growing Hamburg population. Since 2020, around 60,000 new people have been moving to the Hanseatic city annually, which makes the demand for modern mobility solutions essential, as
The heart of this great restructuring is the digitization of the S-Bahn operation. As a first step, Hamburg has already started with the pilot project "Digital S-Bahn Hamburg", which has been running in partnership with Deutsche Bahn and Siemens Mobility since July 2018. In the meantime, the first fully automatic trains of line S2 are in regular operation, and even since September 15, 2022. href = "https://www.hvv.de/de/ueber-uns/projekte/zukunft-beginnt-jetzt"> hvv.de digitization as a key
Digitization is also well understood financially: the planned expenditure of the Senate for the transformation of the S-Bahn network amounts to 285 million euros, while the federal government has already promised 20 million euros for digital signals. The aim is to increase train traffic by 30 percent by 2030-and Hamburg will create the first fully digitized S-Bahn network in Germany, such as Hamburg.de determined.
A total of 169 S-trains are digitized and provided with the latest technology, which enables up to 30 percent more trains on the existing tracks. For Hamburgers, this is not only ecological progress, but also a piece of quality of life. A flawless, modern S-Bahn network could make the way of life of many residents: change sustainably inside.
