Beware of black ice! DWD warns of dangerous roads in northern Germany

In northern Germany, the risk of slippery roads and accidents remains high due to the winter weather conditions. The German Weather Service (DWD) is again warning of slippery roads on December 28, 2025. A light frost was forecast for Sunday night, which could increase the slippery conditions. As NDR reports, there were numerous accidents during the night caused by frozen rain and fog.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was hit particularly hard: over two dozen accidents were registered here, but fortunately most of them remained mild. In the southern district of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte, the emergency services had their hands full, with 15 missions in Neubrandenburg and two drivers slightly injured. The police in Lower Saxony also reported dozens of ice icing accidents: 24 incidents each were reported in the areas of responsibility of the Hanover and Oldenburg police departments. The most serious accident occurred on the A1 near Wildeshausen, where five people were injured.

Slippery and accidents

During the night, the fire department in Hamburg had to help with almost 90 operations due to slippery conditions. Despite the wintry weather, the Hamburg fire department appeared to be well positioned. The police were also active in Schleswig-Holstein and counted a dozen accidents in which six people were slightly injured. There was a collision between two vehicles on Autobahn 25 near Curslack, and four people were injured.

The current weather conditions in the north and east of Germany remain tense. Die Zeit highlights that the risk of ice could last until the morning, especially in an area from the Dutch-German border via Bremen and Hamburg to the German-Polish border, where, according to the DWD, the second highest warning level applies. In many cities and regions, pedestrians, drivers and cyclists struggle with slippery conditions.

Forecasts for the coming days

The outlook for the coming days promises changeable weather. Another cold front is expected to impact the region this evening. According to Weather Hazards it will continue to be frosty over the next few days, with possible snowfall at the beginning of next week. Especially in the night hours, slippery conditions will occur again due to freezing wetness or freezing wetness, which will continue to make the road situation precarious.

Overall, caution is advised to prevent accidents. Residents are urged to keep an eye on current weather warnings and road conditions and drive carefully where possible. Winter has us firmly in its grip and the situation could get even worse in the coming days.
