A7 expansion: eight lanes open for Hamburg-Heimfeld on Monday!

From July 7, 2025, traffic can look forward to a new section of the A 7. An almost 3.7 kilometer long section between the future Hamburg-Hafen motorway junction and the Hamburg-Heimfeld junction will then be opened. The renovation work has now been completed and the A 7 is being expanded from six to eight lanes in order to sustainably improve the traffic situation on this important north-south axis in Germany. The expansion is not only an investment in the future, but is also intended to significantly increase performance and traffic safety DEGES reported.

A look at the construction work shows that the work took around four and a half years. Sebastian Haß, the Hamburg boss of DEGES, emphasizes the positive impact on traffic flow. With the new eight-lane structure, driving on the A7 will not only be smoother, but also safer. But before that happens, the final work still needs to be done between July 4th and 7th. During this time, the A7 remains completely closed between the Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld junctions. This includes, among other things, the construction of the median crossing as well as various drainage, road construction and marking work, reports NDR.

Important investments and improvements

When it comes to the question of financing, it should be noted that the federal government has invested around 250 million euros in this expansion. This clearly shows how important the A 7 is viewed as Germany's central lifeline. The expansion not only includes widening the road, but also measures to reduce noise, such as the construction of noise protection systems and new rainwater treatment tanks. The aim is to ensure a continuous eight-lane route up to the state border of Schleswig-Holstein, as stated on the website Autobahn GmbH listed.

In the coming years it is also planned to expand the rest of the A 7 to eight lanes by the end of 2026. Meanwhile, the expansion of the A 26-West is expected to be completed a year later than planned due to poor ground conditions. Traffic disruptions cannot be ruled out in the future, but the city of Hamburg is sticking to its vision of optimizing the transport infrastructure for all citizens.
