Linz-Ebelsberg equestrian center: A farewell to 60 years of tradition!

The Linz-Ebelsberg equestrian center, the largest riding stable in Upper Austria, will close its doors in summer 2025. A mutual decision between the Unionreitclub St. Georg Linz and the Kast co-ownership community led to the termination of the rental agreement. Helmut Morbitzer, the board of the URC St. Georg, regrets this step, the effects of which will be felt not only for the club itself, but also for the equestrian community in the region. “The facility was an important meeting place for equestrian sports greats for decades,” says Morbitzer. In fact, for many years, top-class competitions such as the CSIO attracted the best riders from all over the world to Linz.

The closure represents a loss for both popular and elite sports. This is also emphasized by a report from nachrichten.at, which highlights the historical significance of the facility. “Thousands of spectators came to see stars like Hugo Simon and Thomas Frühmann,” it says. The upcoming state championships taking place next week and the Upper Austrian state championships at the end of June 2025 could be the facility's last major events. After these championships the closure will come into effect.

The future remains uncertain

What will now happen to the area in Ebelsberg? The Kast co-ownership community has not yet made any decisions about possible successor use. What is interesting is that the region does not want to give up despite this development. Helmut Morbitzer is already planning to continue the tradition of tournament sports in Linz, with events on the Urfahranermarkt grounds, including a “CSIO Youth tournament” in 2026.

Equestrian sport has a long and eventful history that dates back to ancient times. Horse racing in Mesopotamia or the Olympic disciplines of the ancient Greeks contributed significantly to the development of this sport. In the Middle Ages, it was the knightly tournaments that attracted large crowds, and today equestrian sports still captivate spectators. In modern times, the focus has shifted to horse health and new technologies that are evolving the sport and prioritizing animal welfare.

An end and a new beginning

The closure of the Linz-Ebelsberg equestrian center is more than just the end of an event location; it marks a turning point in the history of equestrian sports in the region. A new chapter will be opened when perhaps new forms and places are found for this traditional sport. However, the passion for horses and riding remains undiminished, and those in the saddle will continue to seek new challenges.

With this in mind, hopes remain that the future of equestrian sports in Linz holds exciting developments. With every challenge comes an opportunity, and we're excited to see what the coming years have in store for the region's equestrian community.
