Series of burglaries in Hamburg: Police intervene in time thanks to Airtag!

Over the weekend, the police in Hamburg solved several break-ins and impressively demonstrated how modern technology can help in the search. On Saturday, June 14, 2025, a 42-year-old resident of an apartment building in Hamburg-St. Georg is a victim of a burglary. After he got home, he noticed that his valuables and his wallet with an airtag had been stolen. The remarkable thing about this incident: The resident informed the police and traced the Airtag signal to a hotel on Steindamm, where the police officers arrested three Georgians between the ages of 43 and 45. Some of them were later released due to a lack of strong suspicion, while a 45-year-old Georgian was taken to prison. Police also recovered stolen items in a search warrant. This is reported by Polizei.news.

On the same day, two other perpetrators were caught in Hamburg-Osdorf and Eidelstedt. An attentive witness observed a 23-year-old man breaking a window in a shopping center and entering the premises. Police dog Ria was quickly on the scene and caught the perpetrator in the building. However, after initial measures, the young German was released again. In Eidelstedt, the police caught two men aged 15 and 20 who tried to break into a school. They were also able to be released after the police measures, but not without their legal guardians being informed.

Burglary in Hamburg-Harburg

The situation was similarly precarious in Hamburg-Harburg. A resident noticed that a manhole grille to an open basement window of a restaurant had been removed. Police and investigators were quickly deployed and were able to arrest a 34-year-old Albanian on site. He was also taken to the detention center.

General burglary statistics

The recent increase in home break-ins in German cities is an issue of great importance. According to Statista, there were around 119,000 cases of theft in or from homes nationwide in 2023, with the numbers being particularly high in urban areas such as Hamburg. The clearance rate of 14.9% in 2023 is the lowest in a long time. A worrying trend: a high proportion of foreigners among the suspects, which in Hamburg is as high as 65.6%. This shows how important cohesion between citizens and the police is in order to meet these challenges. Further information on the crime situation can be found on Statista.
