Major construction site on the S2: massive restrictions and operational changes!

Hamburg S-Bahn passengers have to adapt to some restrictions. From October 18th to November 2nd, the S2 route between the Berliner Tor and Billwerder-Moorfleet will be completely closed. Serious switch work around Bergedorf train station and the renewal of two railway bridges on Wendenstrasse and Anckelmannsplatz are behind these measures. Switch work on the weekends 25th/26th October and from October 31st to November 2nd bring additional restrictions that will reduce the clock frequency.

Deutsche Bahn has set up a replacement rail service so that passengers can still get to their destination quickly. Direct buses run every five minutes between Berliner Tor and Bergedorf. In addition, trains on the S2 route between Billwerder-Moorfleet and Bergedorf/Aumühle will continue to run every ten minutes. However, it will be difficult for the route towards Altona, which will be completely eliminated during the closure. Funnily enough, the section between Berliner Tor and Bergedorf is one of the busiest in Hamburg, which makes the measures particularly challenging.

Extensive work and modernization

The construction work during the closure period is not only carried out for pure maintenance, but also serves to modernize: tracks, switches as well as the control and safety technology are being brought into shape. “The time will be used optimally,” said a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn, “to sustainably improve our infrastructure.” In everyday life in Hamburg, this work fits seamlessly into the upcoming general renovation of the Hamburg-Berlin route.

The railway's chutzpah also stands in a larger context: the railway overpass at Anckelmannsplatz has been part of the cityscape since 1905, and its renovation is a sign that Hamburg always has a good hand for maintenance and progress.

Timetables and passenger attention

Passengers are well advised to find out about the current timetables before traveling, as regional transport is not available as a transfer option due to the diversions that have arisen. Anyone who wants to travel the route from November 3rd must also be prepared for a closure between the Berliner Tor and Tiefstack.

Deutsche Bahn runs more than 350 trains on the entire route every day, of which over 300 are S-Bahn trains. With such numbers, it is important to react quickly to changes and possibly resort to alternative transport options, such as good connections with regular bus services.

Overall, the construction work period is considered to be favorable, as a large part of the work falls during the Hamburg autumn holidays. This makes it possible to keep restrictions in commuters' everyday lives as low as possible, even if the work continues beyond the holiday period. Passengers are warmly invited to find out about developments and timetable changes on the transport companies' websites.
