Experience the splendor of the 18th century in Celle Castle!

A very special musical evening is on the program of the Knights' Hall in Celle Castle on July 2nd. From 7 p.m. the kidnaps Hamburg council music into the musical world of Caroline Mathilde. Under the title “Residenzklänge – Music from Caroline Mathilde's Time” a varied program is offered that deals with works from the 18th century. In collaboration with soprano Isabel Schicketanz, a variety of compositions will be presented that would certainly have delighted Caroline Mathilde.

Caroline Mathilde, the Queen of Denmark and a passionate music lover, always had an open ear for the sounds of her time. She played the harpsichord, enjoyed singing and was very versatile in her musical preferences. Her musical heritage demonstrates her preference for works by composers such as Georg Philipp Telemann, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Nikolaus Adam Strungk, who are considered “pre-classics”. Even her sheet music collection speaks of an openness to the music of her era, which was primarily about the expression of emotions.

A highlight in the castle

The evening not only offers the opportunity to hear the music of composers such as Telemann and C.P.E. Not only to enjoy Bach, but also to experience some historical instruments such as the viola da gamba and theorbo up close. The Hamburg Ratsmusik has been a fixture in historically informed performance practice for over 30 years and is supported by the impressive voice of Isabel Schicketanz, known as a leading soprano for the period from the 16th to 18th centuries.

A special highlight of the evening will be the performance of an aria from a cantata that Filippo Finazzi composed on the occasion of Caroline Mathilde's birthday in 1767. Telemann, the music director in Hamburg and representative of the early Enlightenment, is often associated with events in Altona and Denmark. It can be assumed that his works were also heard in Caroline Mathilde's salons.
