Hamburg awakens: ferry, croquet and the charm of the PEKING!
A lot is happening in Hamburg! The city is breaking new ground and bringing back old traditions. With the beginning of autumn, the people of Hamburg can look forward to exciting news that will give the Hanseatic city a big boost.
The restart of the ferry to Blankenese, which has been making its rounds since the summer of 2025, is very recent. This connection leads directly from the city to the beautiful Elbe beaches in the west of Hamburg and is initially only served on weekends. A highlight of this connection is the view of the Blankenese ferry pier, where the picturesque staircase district is visible on the land side and a wide view over the Elbe on the water side. You can also enjoy fresh fish dishes in the adjacent FischClub or northern German classics in Ponton op'n Bulln, while the background noise of the container ships creates a maritime ambience.
Traditions revived
Another comeback in Hamburg is the traditionally cultivated croquet. This sport has a long history in the city since 1640 and is celebrating its big comeback with the Germany tournament at the end of August on the Palmaille. The Hamburg Croquet Club invites all sports enthusiasts and curious people to take part in this entertaining event.
The historic sailing ship “PEKING” has also found its way back to the port city. Since September 7, 2020 in Hamburg, the four-masted barque had previously threatened to be scrapped in New York. Thanks to courageous initiative, it can now be visited and tells the stories of the sea.
Economy and art in transition
In Winterhude there is news from the traditional shop “Fisch-Böttcher”, which was founded in 1913. From 2025 it will open under the new name “Fisch-Böttcher by Selly” and promises a breath of fresh air into the city’s time-honored fish tradition.
Plus, Michael Jackson is back on stage! In the musical “MJ”, which brings the character of the King of Pop to life, the twin brothers Elias and Joshua Davis will take on the roles. A fun fact: Michael Jackson's last major appearance in Hamburg took place in 1992.
Vinyl and second hand
The love for vinyl records is also in full swing in Hamburg. Young collectors and record dealers, including the well-known Zardoz Records, are contributing to a real comeback of these classics. This is not only due to the quality of the sound, but also the feeling of “hand-picking” these records.
Hamburg's first second-hand hardware store has also opened in Hammerbrook. Under the motto “Keep scrap” it was launched by committed young people from Hamburg to save usable materials and start a sustainable project.
A place to linger and marvel
The Julius Grube shipyard is being redesigned and is to be transformed into a leisure and working idyll. The takeover of the site took place in May 2025 and promises an exciting change for this historic location.
And that's not all! To mark the 100th anniversary of regular bus service in Hamburg, there are historic buses on special trips. Nostalgia is back on the streets of the city, bringing many memories of the good old days.
Last but not least, a special event awaits us on April 12, 2025: the show “Da Capo Udo Jürgens” at the CCH Hamburg, which celebrates the great artist's musical legacy. With well-known hits and state-of-the-art technology, this show is sure to be a special treat for all music lovers.
Hamburg remains a city that cleverly combines tradition and modernity and where there is always something going on. The coming months promise to be exciting and varied!
