Frankfurter Duygu D. in court: IS supporter in the dock

In the shadow of the threats from the Islamic State (IS) stands 33-year-old Duygu D. from Frankfurt, who has to answer in court because of her alleged membership. The trial against the woman, who traveled to the war zones of Syria in 2015, begins on September 2, 2025, and the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court has now opened the main hearing. This reports Tixio.

Duygu D. traveled to Syria in March 2015, where she lived in the IS sphere of influence and married a fighter from the organization. While her husband took part in missions, Duygu took care of the household and raising her children. Her life in the areas controlled by the terrorist organization was characterized by strict adherence to the IS ideology, but also included financial aspects: Duygu and her husband received monthly support from IS. The indictment against her was approved in June 2025 by a three-judge State Security Senate, which discussed the allegations of membership in a terrorist organization ordinary-gerichtslichkeit.hessen.de reported.

The return and its consequences

After her arrest by Kurdish units in 2019, Duygu D. was returned to Germany with her children in March 2022. Her stay in IS territory has had a major impact not only on her, but also on her children. The question of the resocialization of IS returnees is becoming more and more urgent, especially with regard to the shocked family structures and the possible radicalization of the children. The Federal Agency for Civic Education highlights that many returnees are young and often grew up in worrying circumstances. This brings with it challenges ranging from integration into society to custody issues.

Experts warn of the dangers radicalized returnees pose to society. Duygu D.'s experiences shed light on the need to deal with such cases responsibly, which could also trigger a public debate about security aspects and the successful reintegration of these people.

In summary, Duygu D. is now in court while society discusses how to deal with former IS supporters. The ongoing negotiations from September 2nd to further dates in October 2025, such as October 9th, 11th, 12th, 6th, 14th and 16th, will be of enormous importance for everyone involved.
