Police stop 51 cyclists at red light: security offensive in Hamburg!

The Hamburg police launched a comprehensive control operation in Hoheluft-West on Wednesday under the motto “Mobile but safe”. This measure aimed to make both cyclists and e-scooter users aware of compliance with traffic rules. From 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., numerous road users on Hoheluftchaussee were checked.

The results of the checks are impressive: a total of 51 cyclists and one e-scooter user were caught crossing a red light. These violations are punished dearly; The fine is 60 euros, and even 100 euros for driving while red. In this context, it was also discovered that five cyclists were traveling as ghost cyclists, i.e. in the opposite direction of travel. The police also caught another five cyclists talking on the phone, which is also punishable with a fine of 25 euros. Anyone who endangers other road users can even expect to pay 30 euros.

Controls and fines

The police didn't just show up on the bikes - drivers weren't spared either. They had to receive a total of seven tickets for illegal parking. Such checks should take place more regularly in the future in order to increase traffic safety in Hamburg.

But what happens when e-scooter drivers violate the rules? According to bussgeldkatalog.org, e-scooters have been permitted in Germany since June 15, 2019, but users must also observe numerous regulations. For example, a missing or non-functioning bell results in a fine of 15 euros, while a lack of lighting is punished with 20 euros. Driving on sidewalks also carries fines and can cost up to 30 euros.

Rules for e-scooter users

E-scooters are allowed to travel at a maximum speed of 20 km/h. Here too, liability insurance is mandatory and drivers must be at least 14 years old. A general operating license (ABE) is essential for operation.

In addition, the e-scooters must meet various safety requirements, such as a separate braking device and appropriate lighting. The ADAC website states that there is no requirement to wear a helmet, but that wearing a helmet is recommended. By the way: Similar fines apply to drunk driving as to drivers - from 0.5 per mille the fine is 500 euros.

The police are planning to make such checks more intensive and to pay more attention not only to bicycles, but also to e-scooter users. One more reason to always keep your eyes open when driving and to take the rules seriously!

Hamburg road users should be aware that road safety is not just an individual concern, but is of great importance for everyone on the road. So stay mobile, but also stay safe!
