Major U1 closure in Hamburg: This is what commuters need to know from Monday!
From Monday, June 16, 2025, there will be extensive restrictions on the U1 subway line in Hamburg's northeast. The sections of the route between the Volksdorf and Ahrensburg-West stops will be closed for several weeks until the end of November. This is due to the necessary renewal of bridges and signal boxes that are over 100 years old, as subway operations manager Sven Möller announced in a statement. The construction work is part of the larger initiative to modernize and expand public transport in Hamburg.
The closures are broken down as follows:
- 16. Juni – 20. Juli: Volksdorf – Ahrensburg West
- 21. – 27. Juli: Volksdorf – Großhansdorf
- 28. Juli – 18. August: Volksdorf – Buchenkamp
- 19. August – 8. Oktober: Volksdorf – Ohlstedt
- 9. – 12. Oktober: Buchenkamp – Volksdorf – Ohlstedt
- 13. Oktober – 30. November: Berne – Volksdorf
Passengers should prepare for an increase in travel time of up to 20 minutes. Extensive replacement bus services are being made available for the affected routes and road users are asked to pay attention to the notices and announcements at the stops. The information is also available in the hvv app or on the website hvv.de/U1 available.
Construction work and modernization projects
As part of the renovation work, a total of four bridge structures will be addressed: Two bridges, Ahrensburger Weg and Lerchenberg, will be completely replaced, while Farmsener Landstrasse and Meiendorfer Weg will be repaired. In addition, renovations are also planned on the platforms at the Volksdorf stop and at the Buckhorn stop. There will also be track construction work on several sections.
The current measures are part of a broad modernization strategy of the Hamburger HOCHBAHN for 2025, which, in addition to the bridge renovations, also includes the extension of the U4 and the barrier-free expansion of stops. The digitalization of the U2 and U4 also plays a crucial role in significantly improving the performance of local public transport. Particular attention is also being paid to the planned transition of the subway to fully automated operation from 2026, as entwicklungsstadt.de emphasizes.
The planned changes and improvements show that Hamburg has a good hand when it comes to both sustainably modernizing the city's infrastructure and meeting the needs of its passengers. However, patience will be required from all passengers until all of these projects are completed.
Although the construction work faces challenges, users can look forward to significantly more efficient local transport - in line with Hamburg's transport policy.
