A7 and Elbtunnel: 55 hour full closure starting this evening!

From this evening onwards the motto in Hamburg will be “Attention: construction site”. The A7 will be closed for 55 hours from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Monday morning. The section between the Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld junctions is affected in both directions. The reason for the extensive work is the assembly of traffic sign gantries and the checking of the software in the Elbtunnel computer. A new tunnel control center will also be set up in the Elbe Tunnel operations building. This measure is part of the project to expand the A7 from six to eight lanes. The work on the northbound lane was completed in spring 2024, and construction work on the southbound lane is now underway, as auto-motor-und-sport.de reports.

Large-scale diversions via the A1, A21 and B205 are planned to redirect traffic during the closure, which is expected to last 55 hours. If you are coming from the south, you can turn onto the A1 from the Buchholzer triangle or Horster triangle via the Maschener Kreuz. Drivers from the north have the option of taking the B205 from the Neumünster-Süd junction and then continuing on to the A1. In addition, inner-city alternative routes via the Hamburg-Heimfeld and Hamburg-Stellingen junctions are signposted.

Blocking details

The driveways of the affected junctions, including Stellingen (26), Volkspark (27), Bahrenfeld (28), Othmarschen (29), Waltershof (30) and Heimfeld (32), will be closed from Friday at 9 p.m. During the closure, traffic on the B75 will also be redirected towards Hamburg-Centrum or A1.

The new electronic display boards and a network control system (NBA) will ensure that diversions are well informed so that all road users always have an overview. Heavy and large transport must avoid the A7 during this time, as passage in both directions is not possible. In the coming weeks, further details on the alternative routes will be published so that all planned routes remain clear and manageable.

Outlook for upcoming closures

For everyone who regularly uses the A7, there will be further closures in 2025: Maintenance and technical work in the Elbe Tunnel will take place from October 17th to 20th. The K20 elevated road must also be closed from November 7th to 10th for construction and testing measures. There will also be maintenance work on the Stellingen tunnel from November 14th to 17th and work in the main tunnel of the K20 elevated road on December 6th and 7th. And so drivers who regularly drive to and from Hamburg can expect some diversions that will be necessary throughout the autumn and winter period, as ndr.de notes.
