U4 expansion: New stop in Grasbrook brings hope for Veddel!

A big step for Hamburg's transport connections: the extension of the U4 over the Elbe is taking shape. How developmentcity.de reports, the new Grasbrook stop is being planned in order to better connect the up-and-coming district of the same name to the city center and at the same time to open up the Veddel.

The planning for the 1.3 kilometer long section has now been completed. The documents can be viewed publicly until August 8th, and objections are possible until the beginning of September. The responsible authority will evaluate the feedback so that construction may begin as early as 2027. The Grasbrook stop is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2031.

A new district with a lot of potential

The new Grasbrook district, which extends over 50 hectares, will provide around 3,000 apartments for around 6,000 people and space for up to 16,000 jobs. The plan envisages a division into the Hafentorquartier with a commercial focus and the Moldauhafenquartier, which will create space for living space and social infrastructure.

The stop will be built over the Vltava harbor, while the subway will run on a new bridge that is about 300 meters long. This bridge will contain carbon elements and also provide a walking and cycling path that is 7 meters wide. As part of the construction project, a steel viaduct “Am Moldauhafen” is planned, which will be around 370 meters long and offer space for additional parking facilities. Hamburg.de informed that the bridge will have two levels of use: the track and the stop are on the first level, while the connection to the access zones will be set up on the second level.

Public transport in focus

This project not only closes a gap in local public transport south of the Elbe, but also relieves pressure on private transport. The connection enables around 13,000 people in the area to quickly reach the rapid transit network, making it possible to get to the city center in around 13 minutes. Hochbahn.de emphasizes that the residents of northern Veddel will also have quick access to the U4 via the Veddel Bridge.

In addition, an ideas competition will take place in autumn 2024 to determine the name of the Moldauhafen stop. With a view to the future, a possible extension of the U4 towards Wilhelmsburg is also being investigated in order to further develop the economic potential.

The planning approval authority will carry out the environmental impact assessment and interested citizens will have the opportunity to comment up to one month after the interpretation period, which ends on August 8th. The contact persons for questions are Sandra Wahl, Antje Dein and Laura Strobach from the Authority for Economic Affairs, Labor and Innovation in Hamburg. It seems as if Hamburg is facing an exciting expansion of local transport - a really exciting project for all residents!
