Pond desludging in Wesselhoeftpark: New habitats for nature!

Something is happening in the heart of Altona! The pond in Wesselhoeftpark will be desilted by the end of February 2026 in order to improve the living conditions for numerous animal species. This measure, which is being carried out in close coordination with the Altona district and the garden monument protection agency, also provides for the creation of a shallow water zone for frogs, toads and newts. As hamburg.de reports, the invasive knotweed is also being removed over a large area and replaced with native trees such as Pfaffenhütchen and black elderberry.

These measures not only promote biodiversity, but also benefit 19 different bird species that live in Wesselhoeftpark. With the project “Naturally Hamburg!” The Authority for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture promotes the experience of nature in a total of 38 parks and nature reserves in cooperation with the district offices.

Road closures during construction work

In order to progress the work without major disruption, three paths in Wesselhoeftpark will be closed from December 8th, 2025 to February 28th, 2026. Another route could be affected on a daily basis, so keep an eye out if you are traveling in the area!

There is great enthusiasm about the upcoming changes. Many residents and nature lovers are looking forward to the new living spaces that will be created as a result of the decisive renovations. In this way, we are not only creating new living spaces, but also actively contributing to climate protection and the preservation of urban nature.

A good hand for nature

Such projects are indispensable for sustainable urban development, and the “Naturally Hamburg!” initiative. shows how important it is to actively protect and promote our nature. Further information on the urban nature initiatives can be found on the [Federal Environment Ministry] website (https://www.bundesumweltministerium.de/stadtnatur).

In Altona we don't just shovel and remove sludge, we also show a good hand for our environment. This is not only a benefit for the wildlife, but also for everyone who likes to be in nature and wants to preserve a piece of greenery in the middle of the city.
