New life for Burchardplatz: Hamburg flagship project starts!
A new shine for the Burchardplatz in Hamburg: With a future -oriented project, this historical place in the Kontorhausviertel should not only be upgraded optically, but also functionally redesigned. The place, surrounded by striking buildings such as the Chilehaus, Mohnhof and Sprinkenhof, is known throughout Germany and has been raised to the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. The initiative for a Business Improvement District (BID) aims to improve the Burchardplatz and neighboring streets both design and functionally, such as Hamburg Burchardplatz.
The design, which emerged in the urban planning and open space competition in 2021 as the winner, comes from the WES GmbH landscape architecture. The plans include not only a redesign of the Burchardplatz, but also an upgrading of the surrounding street spaces in order to highlight the historical character of the Kontorhausviertel, so hamburg.de.
upgrading and user -friendliness
The focus is on the creation of spacious side areas that are intended to revitalize the ground floor and promote external catering. A very special highlight is the introduction of a weekly market and temporary events that not only activate the space, but also ensure more quality of life. In addition, over 24 new trees are planned in the planning to strengthen the green atmosphere and increase the number of trees in the quarter from 30 to 44.
The planned investments of around 2.2 million euros are expected to start in autumn 2025 for construction work. Burchardstraße (East), Burchardplatz itself and the Peter Schulz-Platz should become pedestrian zones with appealing seating. Spanning cable lighting and bollard lights that will contribute to the attractiveness of the new freedom provide atmospheric lighting.
The historical context
The Burchardplatz is not only an architectural, but also a historical heritage. It was designed as the first pure office in Europe after the Cholera epidemic and has made a name for itself internationally since then. The BID initiative plays a central role here, because it takes into account both the historical heritage as well as modern aspects of traffic management and the protection of nature and climate, reports Building culture NRW.
The planned upgrading also strengthens the connection to HafenCity, which benefits both the residents as well as the traders and visitors. The upgrading of the Burchardplatz should therefore be a profit for everyone - a successful mix of past and future, which the heart of Hamburg will surely keep up with.
