Hamburg's new town hall quarter: pedestrian zone and new gastronomic highlights!
Since July 17, 2025, the new town hall district in Hamburg has been shining in all its splendour. After years of planning and intensive construction work, the citizens were now able to celebrate the official opening of this impressive project. It is located between the town hall market, the cathedral square and the Nikolaifleet, and has set itself the goal of significantly enriching the cityscape and at the same time creating a centerpiece for the population. All of Hamburg reports on a colorful dining scene that includes over 50 shops and around 25 restaurants, bars and cafés.
The transformation of Kleine Johannisstrasse into a pedestrian zone was a central element of the redesign. In order to increase the quality of stay, new benches and trees were planted, and the old line of sight from the Rathausmarkt to the Speicherstadt was significantly improved. The plans come from the renowned landscape architecture firm Bruun & Möllers, which has developed a design concept based on the already successful example of the Business Improvement District (BID) Nikolaiquartier.
A successful interaction between business and urban development
The BID Rathausquartier, which emerged from a collaboration between 40 property owners, aims to improve the district through community measures. Around 3.67 million euros will be available for this over the next five years. The Authority for Urban Development and Housing is contributing an additional 4 million euros, of which the funds come from the “Upgrading of Public Urban Spaces” and “Hamburg Economic Stabilization Program 2021/22” programs. These investments are intended to help maintain and strengthen the mix of industries in the district Hamburg.de.
The renovation work, which began in 2023, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. This comprehensive project is not only an example of the revitalization of an inner city area, but also shows how business and urban development can go hand in hand. The success of the BID is measured primarily by the improvement of public space, the maintenance of the quality of stay as well as location marketing and events.
Facts and figures about the transformation
The total cost of the project is around 7 million euros. The facts about the new pedestrian zone are particularly noteworthy:
| feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Length of the pedestrian zone | approx. 110 meters |
| Granite paving stones | approx. 234,000 pieces (approx. 820 tons) |
| Concrete paving stones | approx. 50,200 pieces |
| Extended area for pedestrians | from 5,800 m² to 9,100 m² |
| number of trees | from 12 to 33 (including 11 existing trees) |
| Car parking spaces | reduced from 104 to 45 |

Overall, the Rathausquartier is a flagship project for Hamburg that shows how the city center can be revitalized with a clever concept and a strong community. But this example is not only relevant locally. The discussion about BIDs, which have become established in other cities and districts, highlights the importance of landowners working together to improve the quality of life for everyone Architecture sheet.
The future of Hamburg's town hall district looks promising, and it will be interesting to see what impulses this new center will provide for the entire city.
