Volunteering with heart: Hamburg-Mitte honors committed everyday heroes!
The prize for outstanding volunteer work was once again awarded in Hamburg-Mitte, an important event that is all about civic engagement. The prize is endowed with a total of 10,000 euros and is awarded in four categories, each with prize money of 2,500 euros. [Hamburg.de].
In the **Voluntary Lifetime Achievement** category, Horst Bethke from the Finkenwerder von 1893 e.V. gymnastics and sports club received an award. He has been active in sport for over 50 years, not only as a player, but also as a coach and mentor for many young talents. His life story shows how important such role models are for society.
Another award winner is the team from the Children's Club Hamburg of the “Feine Ukraine” e.V. association, which was awarded in the category **Group award for voluntary work in a team**. The group is a valuable contact point for refugee children from Ukraine and offers creative, educational and psychological offers in Rothenburgsort, Hamm and Hammerbrook.
Individuals in the spotlight
The prize for **outstanding volunteer work by an individual** went to Gottfried Vogt from “Essen für alle” in St. Georg-Borgfelde. He has been organizing weekly care for hundreds of people who need support for over 16 years. His tireless work has made a real difference to many people in the area.
The **Meryem Çelikkol Special Prize for special commitment to integration work for young people** was also awarded. This honor goes to Yama Waziri and the team at First Contact e.V., who are passionate about the participation of refugee children. Their commitment to accommodation in Mümmelmannsberg, Wilhelmsburg and Billstedt shows how important integration is for harmonious coexistence.
Volunteering as a social pillar
Around 16.9 million people in Germany volunteer, as Statista presents these impressive figures. Every year on December 5th, “International Volunteer Day” is celebrated to honor the valuable work of these people. Your voluntary, unpaid helpers are the backbone of an active society and promote a sense of community among each other. These commitments are often based in organizations such as sports clubs, fire departments or charities, which underlines their importance.
When it comes to volunteering, it is clear that older adults are particularly well represented, while young people often do voluntary work before or after studying. The Federal Voluntary Service, which has existed since 2011, is open to all age groups and is an opportunity for many to get involved in society and gain experience.
These awards impressively show how complex and important volunteer work is. The award winners are not only role models, but also inspirations who encourage people to become active themselves - because commitment makes community come alive.
