New mobility for Harburg: hvv hop is being expanded to cover the entire area!
Hamburg mobility is taking a new turn. From August 4, 2025, the on-demand service hvv hop will be expanded to the entire Harburg district. From this date, residents in the newly added districts such as Altenwerder, Cranz, Francop, Hausbruch, Moorburg, Neuenfelde and Neugraben-Fischbek will have the opportunity to use the service, which previously only covered the eastern part of Harburg. Bus planner reports that this change should ensure a significantly better connection of rural areas to the existing public transport.
Since then, hvv hop has already welcomed around 430,000 passengers since its launch in January 2023, a sign of the growing acceptance of the offer. The project duration has now been extended early until December 31, 2026. Martin Bill, State Councilor at the Authority for Transport and Mobility Transition, emphasizes how important such on-demand services are, especially for rural regions. A real opportunity, how VHH Mobility added.
New operating concept for better connection
The operating concept of hvv hop will be revised with the expansion, so that shuttles will no longer run on routes along the S-Bahn and bus lines. Instead, the app will refer to regular public transport offers in the future. In addition, the operating area is divided into two zones to limit the maximum travel distances, making it easier for passengers to use.
From August 2025, a total of 20 shuttles will be available to users, which will be used strategically to improve connectivity. The new operating hours are as follows: Monday to Thursday from 4:00 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., and Friday to Sunday continuously until Sunday midnight. An “advance booking” function is also being added to the app, which is intended to simplify the planning of travel chains in the existing network VHH Mobility.
On-demand transport as a future model
The introduction of on-demand services is gaining momentum in Germany and, according to the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) will play a central role in the future mobility transition. In rural areas, where public transport is often difficult to access, such flexible offers could help reduce car dependency. Currently, 56% of passengers in rural areas travel to their destination every day by car, while only 5% use public transport.
Political support for the introduction of such offers is unbroken. As part of the mFUND innovation initiative, the BMDV promotes the development of efficient, data-based applications. This initiative aims to better connect rural areas with local public transport and improve mobility for all citizens. The OSLO project aims to help cities and municipalities to successfully introduce on-demand offerings.
By increasing the reach of hvv hop and supporting innovative programs, urban mobility in Hamburg will become a bit more flexible and user-friendly. The future of mobility in Harburg seems to be in full swing!
